FAREWELL TO MR. AND MRS. J. L. HARWOOD.
Mr and Mrs Harwood must have felt I gratified at the number of friends attending the public social given in i their honor in the Athenaeum Hall on Wednesday evening, over 200 from all parts of the district being present. The evening was pleasantly passed by the company joining in dancing, for which the music, in the capable hands of Misses Espagne, of Hawera, left nothing to be desired. The floor was perfect, and Mr A. J. Hastie as M.O. surpassed himself. The hall was gaily decorated with Hags, etc. Songs during the evening were rendered by Misses Wilkinson and Espagne, Messrs F. W. Wilkie and T. Herbert. Speeches were made by Messrs F. W. Wilkie, W. J, Barleyman, M. Fitzgerald, D. L. A. Astbury, and J. Sexton, who all spoke very highly of the guests, expressing deep regret &i Mr Harwood's departure from Kaponga. Mr Fitzgerald, in a neat speech, on behalf of the committee and subscribers, presented Mr and Mrs Harwood with a solid silver dinner service. Mr Harwood, in replying, thanked, on behalf of Mrs Harwood and himself, Ihose kind friends for the kind words that had been spoken that eveniDg ; also for the handsome and costly present, which would always bring pleasant memories of Kaponga to mind. Supper, being the next item on the cards, was done ful) justice to, the quality and variety being a credit to the ladies of the district by whom it was supplied. Dancing followed, and wa? continued up to 4 -un., the music for the extras being supplied by Miss Wilkinson and Mr and Mrs C. Pearce. The success of the whole evening was mainly due to the energetic secretary, Mr W. J. Barleyman.
