WAIMATE ROAD BOARD.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Messrs Bridge (Chairman), Powdrell, and Hastie, the committee set up to ' open and deal with tenders, met on Thursday, when the following were dealt with : — 334, Manaia road, supply shingle : J. J. Patterson, 4s 3d per yd; E.Blackhall, 7s per yd ; both declined. 337, Manaia road, supply and breaking of shingle : J. J. Patterson, 6s per yd; W. Humphries, 7s per yd; E. Blackhall, 9s ; all declined. 338, Manaia road, supply 1000 yds machine-dressed metal : W. Humphries. 6a 6d and 11s 6d per yd ; E. Blackhall, 7s per yd ; J. J. Patterson, 6s 6d per yd (accepted). The three contracts related to the same portion of the road, and it was considered cheaper to accept the tender for crushed metal than either of the others. Messrs W. T. Wells and W. Dew attended, handing in subscriptions collected (between £50 and £Q0), and the foreman was authorised to expend same with the Board's subsidy, i.e., £2 for each £1 collected. The collectors are confident of securing more subscriptions. Mr Dew said he would not undertake the job agaio, as, in soliciting funds, the collectors have lo put up with insults, and, further, require to adjourn to the nearest hotel and " shout,' 1 perhaps 3s at times, iv order to wriggle £i out of a seemingly stubborn ratepayer. There was no fun in it, after paying rates and dumping down a big subscription, to tackle such a job.
