WAIMATE ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Board was held on Thursday, there being present Messrs Bridge (chairman), Henson, Wilkie, Borrie, and Davies.

CORRESPONDENCE .

From Treasury, notifying that £120 (10 per cent on the Glenn road loan) had been paid to the Board's credit, also that provisional approval of the Colonial Treasurer had been granted to the necessary steps being taken to raise 6 per cent, on the Central sub- division loan.

George Rutherford made an offer of 6s per ton royalty for right to cut flax on roads near Opunake. The Clerk reported having replied that the Board could only deal with roads east of the Taungatara stream. From Chief Engineer of Roads, stating that the Hoi. the Minister tor Lands regrets he does not see his way at present to issue agreements to the Board authorising the immediate construction of the Mangawhero bridge, Eltham road, and of the Mangawheroiti bridge, Opunake- Stratford road, and notifying that the works will therefore have to remain in abeyance for a while. From the Reserves Agent, advising that natives had complained that Patterson is removing gravel from a Maori burial ground. The Clerk said he had replied that the owner of the land, Hare Patu, had assured him that the gravel pit was not within a chain and a half of the alleged burial ground.

From Reserves Agent, stating that he could trace no notification re contractors entering Hill's section, Taikatu road, for the purpose of taking gravel, and intimating that he understood the contractors had entered and taken gravel without the Public Trusteed permission. If such was the case, he would be under the necessity of bringing an action for trespass against them unless arrangements were satisfactorily made. The Clerk reported having informed the Reserves Agent that the contractors had entered the gravel pit under private treaty with the late Wm. Hill ; and that he had written them advising that they at once communicate with the Agent, giving all particulars of arrangements made.

" THIRDS "

— AUROA ROAD.

The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote asking for information re amounts of annual special rates on section 10, Block V., and section 4, Block VI., Kaupokonui, and whether the selectoi-B of these sections were paying special rates whilst paying " thirds/ and if so, for how long. Information had been supplied. The Commissioner again wrote in answer to the Clerk, advising that the Land Board had resolved that it has no power to agree to O' Sullivan's request to spend the " thirds " on the road, some having been previously pledged for payment of interest on loan.

Later, the new Commissioner sent a letter enquiring if the Board had found it necessary to use the "thirds" to supplement the loan moneys on the road.

The Clerk stated that he had replied that since 'Ist April, 1895, amounts totalling JE225 odd, receipts from the Lands and Survey Department, had been expended on the Upper Auroa road.

SUTHERLAND ROAD,

The Manaia Town Board wrote, agreeing to subsidise works on the boundary of the road and town districts to the extent of £1 for £1.

PALMER ROAD.

The Clerk Hawera County Council wrote, suggesting that any moneys in the Board's hands to the credit of this road should be handed to the Council to supplement the loan expenditure from the Eltham road southwards.

Resolved, That the Council be informed that *£25 will be available between the Railway Reserve and the Eltham road (Northern Sub-division), and about JE3O in the Central Subdivision. (Wilkie — Bridge.)

SUMMONSES.

The Clerk was instructed to sue for all rates unpaid on the 28th February. (Henson— Bridge.)

GATE ON ROAD.

Cecil Evans applied for permission to erect a swing gate across the Wiremu road.
