A meeting of members of the E.R.C. was held on Saturday, Mr R. H. Nolan (president) in the chair. The following new members were elected : Messrs Clementson, O'Donnell, A. H. Duxfield. Acceptances for Egmont B.C. Meeting close to-night.
A cable from London states that the following Australian horses are among the acceptors for the spring races : — Lincoln Handicap, Australian Star 8.7, Grand National, Levanter 9.10, City and Suburban, Australian Star 8.5, Dundonald 7.7, Lancashire Handicap, Levanter 9.12.
Sydney Sportsman pays an appreciative tribute to the ability of Nelson, who was recently presented to E. Cutts by Major George. "In his youth," says our contemporary, " the son of King Cole was a big, lumbering, policeman's horse, and could hardly gallop fast enough to keep out of his own road ; but the material was there, and he was persevered with until he became undoubtedly the greatest horse of his time in Australasia. The equine giant was a whole dark chestnut, and certainly the finest racehorse to the eye that ever trod the turf of New Zealand, and that practically means Australia too."
The News says that the Colonial Seoretary has declined to close the Government Offices on the occasion of races at New Plymouth as requested by the president of the local racing club.
