KAPONGA.

(from our own correspondent.)

A number of residents met on Tuesday evening to consider the advisability of forming an association to enliven the evenings of the coming autumn and winter. Mr Gibson occupied tbe chair, and after discussion it was resolved that a club be formed, to be called " Kaponga Literary and Social Club," oppn to both sexes, and to be entirely unsectarian. A rough draft of constitution and rules was drawn out, and it was arranged that a public meeting be called for Tuesday next, in the Athenaeum Hall, to consider these, to appoint office-bearers, and to make final urrangements for beginning this desirable course of self-improve-ment. It is to be hoped that a large and representative meeting will take place.

As KaDonga is tired of waiting (after laying in a stock of fireworks, etc., about two years ago) for the celebration of peace, it has decided to celebrate the hoisting of the flag and presentations of medals, which the local School Committee have received from the Department, in the Public School grounds on Monday afternoon next. Mr F. McGuire, M.H.R., and Mr B. O. Bobbins have bpen invited to attend, and the wives of the several commit teem en are providing afternoon tea for one and all. All parents and the public are invited to attend this inteiesting event. In addition to the above proceedings, an event of a highly interesting nature will take place.

A friendly game of cricket was indulged in between teams from Eltham and Kaponga on Thursday. The match being a scratch one, scratchy play was the result, the game proving a win for Kaponga. The totals were :— EUbam : 9 wickets 20 and 69 runs, first and second innings respectively. Kaponga : 10 wiokets for 50 first innings, and 44 for 7 wickets second innings. The visitors were entertained at tea by the home team at the Commercial Hotel.
