London, January 26. Two of tbe Yeomanry assert that the Boers in December captured a small convoy near Phillipopolis, and murdered eight native drivers, tying several to the wheels of waggons, and burning them alive.
A sharp fight occurred at Trenfontein on the 21st. Seven were killed and 26 wounded, chiefly Yeomanry. The Vigilance Committee at the Cape strongly protests against an amnesty to the rebels. Received January 27, 9 a.m.
London, January 26. The Netherlands Government admits that the Dutch Red Cross ambulance now interned in Ceylon, abused neutrality by carrying a commandant's letters.
Christchdrch, January 26. It is understood that Captain B. Heaton Rhodbs, of C.V.C., and M.H.R. for Ellesmere, has obtained a commission, and will probably go with either the Eighth or Ninth Contingent to South Africa. His constituents are quite prepared to empower him to go without forfeiting his seat.
Up to this morning, eighty applications for places in the Ninth Contingent had been received by Captain Major.
The New Zealand Times says :— Mr J. H. Stevens, postmaster at Hawera, and brother of Mr John Stevens, M.H.R., has sent a box of books for the use of the men on the voyage to the Cape. Miss F. C. Lysaght has sent a cheque for J6lO to Captain Bartlett, to be spent for the entertainment of the men during the voyage. Christohurch Truth says that in certain circles it is considered not improbable that Colonel Owen, Staff Officer to the Commandant of the New Zealand Forces, may be appointed to the command of the Ninth Contingent. Captain, h. h. Jackson, at present second in command of the South Island Battalion of the Eighth Contingent, has received intimation that he will be officer commanding one of the battalions, probably the South Island one, of the Ninth Contingent.
