NEW ARMY SUPPLY CONTRACT.

London, January 21. l!i is understood that tbe contract for the supply of meat to the army in South Africa is given to a syndicate including Birt, Potbi, Hughes, M. Bergl, Houlder Bros, and Company, cooperating with Cecil Rhodes, Alfred Beit, and the De Beers Consolidated Mines Company, who undertake the distribution and establishing of food stores. Tbe new company is erecting cold stores, and the price is reported to be s£d per pound, including distribution. It is also reported that the contractors will include a proportion of Argentine meat, the War Office agreeing to accept this on the ground that Australia is unable to supply the whole, despite the Agent-General's representations to the contrary.
