In Melbourne recently a greengrocer sued a sergeant of police for a balance due on account of goods supplied to defendant's daughter, who kept house for him. The father alleged that he gave bis daughter money sufficient Jor household requirements, that he had forbidden her to incur any debt, and that he knew nothing of plaintiff's bill until proceedings were threatened. There was no appearance of the daughter, and His Honor, acting-Judge Johnson, under the circumstances, non- j suited the plaintiff " When it was proved," said the Judge, " that a man was keeping his house properly supplied with money, whether he gave it to his wife or daughter as housekeeper, and that he bad definitely forbidden the pledging of his credit, there could be no recovery for goods supplied on account, AH tradespeople should know and understand this.
