CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The annual general meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held in Bank Chambers last evening. There was a sparse attendance. Mr G. W. Tayler was voted to the chair. Mr A. Templer sent an apology for nonattendance owing to illness.

ANNUAL REPORT.

Mr-J. W. Middleton (secretary) submitted the fourth annual report of the Chamber, which was most ably prepared and very voluminous. In it reference was made to the services rendered by Mr A. S. Chapman, the" late President, who had left the district. Mention was made as to the work done by the Chamber, in the matter of the formation of the borough, improvements at the railway station, the running of daily express trains, separation of railway station and post and telegraph office, and the necessity for establishing industries of various kinds. The report regretted that the Chamber had not been appreciated by the general public to the extent that it should have been, and urged that ail business pocple should enter heart and soul into the work of tbe Chamber. The work of tho Chairman (Mr Chapman) and the treasurer (Mr D. Syme) was referred to, and special mention made to the generosity of Mr H. P. H. Graves in giving the use of his commodious rooms free of charge.

The report was favouraby commented on by members, Mr Graves referring to it as a masterly report.

On the motion of Messrs Wilkinson and Lloyd, the report was adopted.

BALANCE SHEET.

Tho Treasurer (Mr D. Syme) read the balance sheet, which showed receipts, £15 8s Gd ; expenditure, £15 11s 6d ; liabilities, £1 9s 63 ; outstanding subscriptions, £6.

Mr Wilkinson moved, That a levy of 2s Od bo mado on ouch mombcr in order to pay outstanding accounts. Seconded by Mr Graves, and carried.
