TOWN IMPROVEMENTS.
On Saturday, a member of our staff inspected the plans of the new building lo be erected between Messrs Wilson and Son's premises and Mr Daxfield's, in High street. The plans, which have been prepared for Messrte Nolan, Tonks, and Co. by Messrs Warren and Stephenson, architects, show a most imposing structure, and one that will certainly be a substantial addition to street architecture in Hawera. The building iB to be of two storeys, having a street elevation of 35 feet, and the exterior view is particularly striking, the style of architecture being Italian renaissance. On the ground floor there will be three large shops, with showrooms and workrooms at the back, the whole length of two shop 3 being 40 I feet, whilst the third will have a depth of 50 1 feet. In the upper floor, approached by a wide staircase of easy grade, with two landings, will be six well-lighted offices, also lavatories, etc. Plastered brickwork will form the walls on three sides of the structure, the front being in wood. The street view shows six windows in the upstairs, whilst large platoglass will be used in the shop fronts. At the top of the front, vases will appear, and in the plan these, as well as the lonic capitals, pediments, etc., show a striking and handsom > edifice. A verandah resting on ornamented cast iron pillars appears in front. Taken all round, the building will be one of which townspeople may well feel proud.
