THE TONGARIRO.
(PER PRBSS ASSOCIATION.! Christohdrch, Maroh 20. The New Zealand Shipping Co., Ltd., has received the following cable from its London office: — "Tongariro is due to arrive at Capetown on March 28. Been delayed in consequence of towing the Northam Castle to Asoension Island."
The damage done by fire to the New Zealand Express Company's stables at Dunedin is estimated at between £7000 and £8000. Sixteen drays and two furniture vans in yards were destroyed. About £1000 worth of the Into Hon. J. M. Larnach's furniture was Inducted, and probably £3000 would be about the value of the whole. A house belonging to Mr R. Brown, Matemateonga, was destroyed by fire the other day. The building was unoccupied, and insured, but the amount does not cover the owner's loss. Mr H. O. Woolmer, manager of the Waitekauri Extended Goldmining Company, whose unfortunate experience was recorded in Wednesday's issue, is a brother of Mr A. S. Woolraer, of this town. Horseowners are reminded that entries for the Egmont Farmers' Union great half-yearly fair clobo to-morrow (Friday) afternoon. Judging by the success of tbe* Union's last half-yearly fair, a large number of entries may be anticipated. A large hay stack belonging to Mr Hawken, Waihi road, ignited through spontaneous combustion this week. Mr H. M. Stowell, as enumerator of the Maori census for Taranaki, has completed the return 5 , and forwarded them to the Department. It is understood there is a slight decrease in the number of the native population in the province.
In the Stratford Court the police pro- ■ ceeded against Mr J. H. Clayton, proprietor of the Ji'gmont Post. The case was brought under, okuse 2 of the Gaming and Lotteries Aot for a breach of the Act in publishing a notice of a lottery taking place in Australia. Defendant, who conducted his own oase, plenfied not guilty, and asked for a nonsuit on the ground that clause 2 (under which the information was laid.) referred solely to. New Zealand, and the advertisement referred to a lottery outside J of New Zealand. The Magistrate agreed with defendant as to the information being laid under the wrong seotion, and nonsuited informant. , - Housewives of a frugal turn of mind should peruße Mr J. E.
