CHRISTCHURCH.
Christchurch, January 24. To-day has been observed in the city as a day of mourning. All the shops were closed, and some of them draped with black. The Cathedral bells rung muffled peels at intervals. The Art Gallery at the Exhibition was thrown open, and the life-size portrait of the Queen there was draped, and at the foot a magnificent wreath was placed by the City Council on behalf of the citizens, and as the day wore on hundreds of other wreaths were laid there.
