MANGELS FOR COWS.

A farmer near Normanby has this season experienced bad luck in feeding | his cows with mangels, and vows that ho will not resort to giving his cows mangels again. Many have fallen into the same mistake as the Normanby farmer in respect to mangels. Cows during the winter time are often cold, thin, and hungry, and when they get the chance of having a square feed .they don't often neglect the opportunity, j Thus cows eating a large quantity of mangels early in the lnorning, when the roots arc at a temperature of freezing point, naturally suffer in consequence of the cold mass they have devoured. The food lies like a block of ice on the stomachs 'of the animals, and grave symptoms soon assert themselves. Owners of stock in this condition have often been fully convinced that anthrax in its very worst form had broken out in their herds, and if the owner only stopped to consider the cause of the alarming appearance of his stock he would soon find the reason. Mangels is one of the most useful winter foods, as well as one of the most prolific croppers we have, but they must be fed sparingly to cattle when the beasts are empty and hungry. Feed the animals frequently, but don't give them too much at a time, would be advice well worth following. It is in overfeeding that the mischief lies.
