That letter was never even acknowledged. On September 6ih, nearly a month later, the commandant telegraphed in genera terms, asking to be infQpm<eil of disbursements out of loj^aj, fond to any invalided members. of tbe con* tingents or wjves ojr families of men. To. ; wards tbj end of September a letter was received from Mrs Berry's father, seating- that no assistance had been given from tbe Government or any fund outside Hawke's Bay. This letter was read by the Mayor, wbo on September 27th wrote to the Defence Minister on the subject. That letter also has never been acknowledged. Mr .Swan emphatically declared that the only communication repeived wep i)m, communication from the. oomman'dant referred to. ' ;
