NEWS AND NOTES.

Church appointments and reading matter appear on fourth page. Laßt night an alarm of fire was rung out, but investigation showed the cause to be merely a dirty chimney. Captain Dreyfus, who is now living at tbe Villa Hauterive, just outside Geneva, is described by one of the few people who saw him on his journey as looking in very good health. His face is full and ruddy, but his hair has turned quite white. He walks with a heavy step, and his shoulders are bent with suffering. He does not go out, but spends all his time in the grounds of the villa. In Palmerston it is proposed to strike a rate equal to a half penny in the £ on oapital value to support the public library and reading-room. Mr R. O. Hendy on leaving Tarata wa9 entertained by a number of settlers, and general wißhes were expressed for his future suocess. To give an idea of the country through which part of the Midland railway passes, it is understood that a tunnel to connect Springfield and Otua will take seven years to construct. Several thousand "pits" have been prepared in close proximity to ihe gaysers at Wbakarewa (Rotorua) for the planting of native trees aud shrubs, it being the intention of tbe State Forestry Department to confine the selection of subjects to those of our native flora. It is intended to prepare 200,000 pits altogether, which is the anticipated number of trees ready for transplanting this season. The Minister of Railways has written to Mr F. G. Wilson of Bulls.—With reference to your letter on tbe 31st ultimo in regard to (a) grain rates, (b) special " sale" tickets, and (c) accelerating morning and evening trains between Palmerston North and Wanganui, I have the honor to inform you that (a) In view of the large reductions in grain rates last year, I regret I cannot see my way to make any further reduction at present, (b) The community generally will benefit by the reduced passenger fares, and I cannot agree to quote special fares for farmers attending sales. The Government does not propose to go below Id per mile for second class travel except at holiday times, (c) So long as these trains are required to work goods traffic the time occupied cannot be reduced. The only way by which they can be accelerated is by seperating the goods and passenger services, and this as the increase of traffic warrants it, will be done throughout the colony. m HE ONLY REPEATS WHAT HAS BEEN SAID ABOUND THB GLOBE! It has been demonstrated repeatedly in every state in the Union and in many foreign countries that Chamberlain's Cough Remedy is a certain preventive and cure for croup. It has become the universal remedy for that disease. M.V. Fisher of Liberty, W. Va., only repeats what has been said around tbe globe when he writes: "I have used Chamberlain's Cough Remedy in my family for several years and always with perfect seccess. We believe that it is not only the best cough remedy, but that it is a sure cure for croup. It has saved the lives of our childroa a number of times." This remedy is for sale at Hawera General Store. Facts are stubborn things. The Customs returns show that more Wertheim sewing maohines are imported into Australasia than all other makes put together, thus proving the superiority of the wonderful Wertheim. Before buying elsewhere it will pay to inspect our stock. — Dixon and Bates Hawera.—(Advt.) Solid Nickel Keyless Lever Watohe guaranteed, 25s.—R. W. Sargent, Watch maker. j i ' I J
