The Salvation Army hold a musical meeting at the Oddfellow's Hall, to-morrow night. . Two or three weeks ago a vessel arrived at Port Chalmers with pipes for Hawera, and again a few days ago the Silverhow arrived at Wellington with half a mile, whioh it is expeoted will be the first to reach Hawera, though the latter vessel was the last to leave Home by some time. The Woodville Examiner says that the peace and safety of the inhabitants of this district are seriously menaced is evidenced by the fact that the parsonage has again been the scene of an attempted outrage. Coming, as it does, on.top of the fact that twice during last week attempts were made to bum down the building, it clearly points out that Borne luffian or ruffians are making a set at that place. On Wednesday afternoon a man knocked at the parsonage door, whioh was answered by Mrs Eooles. The man said that he was a detective, and that he had been instruoted to search the house. He then produced what purported to be a search warrant. Mrs Ecoles said she could not allow him to Garry out his intention. He the masked if there was a man in the house. Mrs Ecoles replied that there was. He still persisted in his threat to search the house, and Mrs Eccles refused him. He then said he also had power to Btick a knife into her. Mrs Ecoles called Mrß Walsh and the servant, and the man, seeing that there were more people in the house than he thought, went away He got into a gig at the gate, and drove away. The gig was hired from the Club Stables. The police have the matter in band. A private letter received in Bawera from Opunake stateß in relation to the Mafeking rejoioings '.—Opunake possessed an old cannon that was found amongst the wreckage on the beaoh belonging to the Lady Harriet. It is an historical piece of cannon, having once been used in storming the Maori pa, and was used against the natives who kept Betty Gund a prisoner at Betty's Island. It is a six-pounder, very rusty, and knooked about. It was loaded, with Sib dynamite, and stuffed with paper and grass, and when it went off it shook every house in the vicinity. The report was heard 8 and 10 miles away. A salute of 15 rounds was fired, and the band played popular airs. A huge fire of .packing oases was made on the top of the cliff overlooking the beaoh. Had any ships been passing they would have Been the whole affair. There was some risk in firing the gun, because of its old age, and it was amusing to see the gunners running for all they were worth as soon as the ruse was ignited. Sometimes the gun would be blown off the carriage and run back 10 or 15 yards and then there would be the job of erecting it, and again the loading up and getting a sight at the kopje of the Boers as it were. One man would have the powder, another the paper for firing, another the grass, and then the rammer. All did something towards the affair and away she goes.
