Tbt 6rst firing for both Mr B. H. Somervail's trophy and tht N.Z. Rifle Association's bronzt medal took place on Friday and Saturday afternoons. On Friday the wind was most ••puzzling" and light dull, but on Saturday tht conditions were more favorable to good shooting. The results art as follows :—

Mr Milne's shooting was most consistent, be having averaged over four points in eaoh matob, and in Mr Somervail's trophy he made "the possible" at the fiOOyas range. The shooting (or the above matches will be continued on Fridays and Saturdays as follows, 10th and 20th, and 26th and 27th January.

Father Power left for Wellington today to attend the annual retreat, and will return on Saturday, the 27th.

The Taranaki annual regatta will be held on the 92nd prox.

The Salvation Army will hold a farewell coffee supper to-morrow evening.

Mr R. R. Leys, who occupied the position of sub-editor of the Taranaki Herald for some twelve months, has severed his connection with that journal, in order to take up a position in Wellington. Prior to his departure, Mr Leys was presented by his friends with an English lever and chain.

Mr J. A. Goodson, of the Commercial Stables, had a narrow escape on Saturday. In company with Mr 0. Brown, the wellknown 0.T., be was driving in a gig along the South road, and when near Mr Welsh's the horse suddenly commenoed to kick. Mr Brown immediately got out, and Mr Goodson, in endeavoring to jump over the back of the gig, got his foot entangled in the reins, his head being between the wheels. Mr Brown, seeing Mr Goodson's dangerous position, stuok to the horse, and eventually liberated Mr Goodson. To rhow how dose the animal's kicks were to Mr Goodson's head, it might be mentioned that his hat and faoe were covered with blood from the horse's heels. The horse and gig were knocked about rather badly.

At a meeting of members of the Hawera Football Club on Saturday evening, called for the purpose of considering the question of erecting a gymnasium. Messrs 8. Adamson, J. Boya, and J. At an enthusiastic meeting of the Sarishionsrs of St. Joseph's held on Sunay it was decided to make an effort this year to wipe out the debt of between £600 and £700 that still remains in this portion of the parish, so that the opening of the new century may see the parish entirely free of debt. It was arranged to inaugurate a series of monthly collections amongst parishioners for this purpose.

The following letter is from the Taranaki News :— " I am one of the victims who was persuaded to come out to Taronaki under special agreement through Mr W. Courtney— vis., to work one month lor board and lodging, and three months (or th« ium of 5a per week, for which he charged me the modest sum of three guineas. Upon arrival here I took train for Eltham, and went to the person I wa« direoted to, and found to my great surprise that this gentleman was wanting an experienced farm hand not later than October, and I did not leave England till November. Mr Courtney knew 1 was not used to farm work; in fact, that is what 1 came to learn, and the gentleman I was sent to admitted that he oould not teaoh me. Ido not wonder at the correspondent to the Christian World trying to warn young fellows from ooming to Taranaki under the advice of Mr Courtney. It is time the Government took this matter in hand, especially when the Agent-General gives Mr Courtney a good name, and tells intending emigrants that he has been reoommended by gentlemen of high standi ing here.— l am, «to., R. W. Tbouas."

I went to Miller and MoGurdy's drag store and they recommended Chamberlain's Colio, Cholera, and Diarrhoea Remedy. It worked like magic, and one dose fixed me all right. It certainly is the finest thing I ever used for stomach trouble.
