Suicide at Wanganui.
(PBR PEKB3 ASSOCIATION.) Wanganui, July 22. Leon Simon, a brewer, committed Buioide this morning by shooting himself with a revolver, in an outhouse at the rear of his residence in Wilson Btreet. Three wounds were inflicted, i two in the throat and one in the mouth. Deceased was an old west coaster and was highly respected. The recent death of a brother and business worries are the supposed causes leading to the perpetration of the aot. Deceased leaves a widow and daughter.
The Banks have agreed to apfain charge exchange on cheques between Hawera and Manaia, a proceeding which is rather in the nature of an imposition. The Calcutta Mail to hand contains startling particulars of a phenomenal oatbreak of cholera in Karachi. The report is dated the 2nd of last month, and states that the outbreak is ascribed to well water polluted by percolation either from a sewage farm or the burial grounds. Within a week over 1000 persons had fallen victims, and for two or three days the mortality averaged over 250 in the 24 hoars. The steamer Argas, from Singapore, reports that when she left there on the 10th ultimo for Sydney the news had just reached Singapore, and hud created intense exoitement. An account describes the outbreak as " one of the moat striking pestilential visitations of modern times.'* Nothing approaching it has been, known in India since June, 1846, when within ft fortnight 900 Europeans, inclusive of 815 soldiers, were swept away, besides 600 native soldiers and 7000 camp followers. The latest official returns from Karachi are 1923 oholera 'cases reported, 1786 of which proved fatal. The population of Karachi is given as 104,000. It is a busy port, frequented chiefly by British shipping, with inward cargoes of metals, machinery, timber, piece goods, liquors, coal and coke, the loading outwards comprising grain, hides, raw silk, wool and ootton.
