(PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Well ngton, July 21. The man Fisher has been committed for trial for violently assaulting Rebecca Griffin and attempting to stab her. A large crowd gathered at Mercerstreet on Thursday night in response to an advertisement calling a meeting of protest against the light fines inflicted in recent sly-grog oases by Mr Stratford, S.M., at Balclutha. Mr Taylor, M.H.R., moved the following i esolution : " This meeting is of opinion that the absurd penalties recently inflicted bj Mr Stratford in connection with the conviction of Alex. Murray for sly-grog selling are calculated to bring licensing law into contempt and discourage the police in the execution of their duty." The voting was about equal, a majority of those present abstaining from voting. Palmbbston North, July 22. At the S.M. Court to-day J. Kuhtze, brewer, was fined £5 each on two charges of failing to keep books showing the quantity of beer sold and removed from tbe "brewery. Two informations charging him with selling and removing beer from the brewery in kegs not having proper stamps affixed were dismissed.
