COMMERCIAL.

Catholic Social.

Notwithstanding the very boisterous weather whioh prevailed last evening, there was a large assembly at the above social in aid of the Convent Sohool fund, and should result in a handsome sum being obtained. On entering the ball one was struck with the uncommon but neat appearance of the stage. A very neat little fire place had been added by means of a perforated immitation log, from which gas jets were burning, giving quite an homely appearance, Mr D. N. Scott being responsible for same. The concert part of the programme was most complete, and included several new voices to Hawera. Misses Cowern, Knight, and Hurley, Mrs Malcolm, Messrs Izett, Hamilton, Connell (oomio), Bobinson, gave vocal items and Mr Coffey t oomio recitation) and Miss Loder Scotch danoe completed the concert programme. The gem of the evening was the duet sung by the Misses Cowern. The ; floor- was in fine order for danoing. The musio supplied by Misses Espagne was first class, extra dances being played by Misses Cowern, O. Espagne, Haughey, and Mr White. The M.'sC, Messrs E. Luoena, A'Couft. O'Sullivan, and J. Connell, kept the dances going merrily till the conclusion, and one and all seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. The supper supplied by the ladies was a credit to thecommittee.who must have worked very hard to provide so excellent a spread. His Worship the Mayor, on behalf of the social com' mittee, thanked all those present for their attendance on so rough a night.

LONDON MARKETS.

The Naw Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have received the following market cable, dated London, 15th July, 1899:

Wool— The sales closed firmly this day. Merino, fine crossbred — The sales closed at an average advance of about 7£ per cent, on last sales closing rates. Medium and coarse crossbred — Since the opening of the sales the tone of the market is firmer. There is no American demand.

The hemp market has (reports the New Zealand Times) experienced a violent change during the past fortnight-. Values two weeks ago were firm at £17 to £17 10s per ton f .o.b. Wellington on strong buying orders from London, but to-day it would be difficult to get a dealer to make a definite offer of £15 per ton. The general body of hemp millers are not affected by this change to any extent, as most of them have their order books, veil filled, and are certain to have their machinery fully employed right up to the close of the year. No one seems to be able to account satisfactorily for the sudden drop in price, bat perhaps the apparent quietness in the Philippines has influenced th« market.
