An Extraordinary Bundle.
(PBR P8833 ASSOCIATION.)
Wellington, July 20.
An extraordinary bungle appears to have been made by the British Commissioner in applying to Lord Ranfurly for an Acting-Consul to fulfil duties during tbe absence of Mr Maxae on Uave. When Major Mais? arrived he learned that four days previously Mr Hamilton Huntei, of Fiji, had been in■tailed as Acting Consul. Almost at the lime time as Mr Elliott made his request to the Governor of New Zealand he forwarded a similar application to the High Commissions of the Western Pacific at Fiji. In the later case the reply was that no one suitable for the position was available. A few days later, however, the Commissior complied with the request by appointing Mr Hunter, and tbe later was taken to Samoa and duly installed without the Commissioner awaiting a reply from New Zealand. Major Mair.was only prevented from returning by the Tutanekai beoanse he was very urgently requested by Mr Eliot to give his experience in the matter of claims of British subjects for compensation in connection with the recent trouble. Major M«ir will probably, return during the next few weeks.
