A reminder is given cf the Mangatoki school concert this evening. It is hardly necessary to give a further reminder of the Fire Brigade Social this evening. A good evening's enjoyment is anticipated. The annual meeting of the Hawera Co-operative Dairy Factory Company w 11 be held at the Egmont Farmers' Union office, to-morrow (Saturday) afternoon at 2. Warena Hunia, the well-known native who figured prominently in the Horowhenua case, has become bankrupt. His liabilities amount to £1022, and his assets are nil. Mr Eeclestield advertises for sale setting of eggs from Brown Leghorns.
At the inquest on a little boy who was supposed to have died from injuries caused by a fall from a sofa in Dunedin, Dr. Macpherson said he could find no injuries to account for death. Taken in conjunction with the evidence given, the fact that there was a raw surfaoe between the little toe and the next one of the left foot, led witness to think that the child died of tetanus (lookjaw). It was a germ disease, and it was a well-known fact that the germ was to be found in the ground, and especially in manure, and there was no doubt but that the germ found its way into the system through the broken skin between the toes. Thegymptoms were exactly what would ocour in a case of tetanus. The child, his father said, was given to going about barefooted. The germ of lookjaw is very common about stable yards. Manaia (writes our correspondent) is about to lose another valuable resident in j the person of Mr T. E. Crowhurst, the genial editor of the Waimate Witness, who, I understand savers his connection .with that paper at the end of the month. Mr Orowhurst has, I hear, purchased a farm at Oakura on whioh he intends ! settling. During his recant visit to New Plymouth Oaptain Alunan, nautical adviser to the Government, learned that the Maoris of the distriot had long been aware of the existenoe of the sandbank whioh Captain Bone, of the Ruahine, recently reported having discovered when his vessel was going to Waitara. Up till 20 years ago the natives used to fish over the bank. The last Admiralty survey of the coast was made in the fifties, and apparently the existence of the bank was not then discovered. Dr Lapraik has reported another oase of scarlet fever on the Manaia road, this making the fifth oase in the same house. The Rev. Phillip will read a paper on "A trip to the Falkland Islands," at next Tuesday's Literary Class at Manaia. At the Manaia S.M. Court on Thursday only one case was set down, and that was adjourned. Mesars Nolan Tonks and Go's Hawera sale on Thursday next will commence at 2 p.m., on account of the Governor's visit. Messrs Hardley and Sons have now a large staff of workmen busily employed in the manufacture of milk cans, coolers, faotory vats, and dairy utensils for the coming season, and dairymen will find a large stock to select from. In the manufacture of milk cans and vats nothing but the best tinned steel is used, the firm being direot importers from England. The milk cans are fitted with heavy welded steel bands, whioh are guaranteed unbreakable. Orders for milk cans are supplied at Hawera prioeß delivered to any township within fifteen miles of Hawera.
