Aj an instance of the inabi lity of the . Railway Department to meet the ordinary requirements of business, the following has been brought under our notice : An intend* ing consignor of fat cattle from Hawera to Palmerston wired from Normanby at midday on Monday, for a track to be available next morning, but on arriving in Hawera learned that he could not have one until Wednesday. It was in fact midday of Wednesday before he could get bis cattle away. So it came to this that cattle lifted from the paddooks on Monday had to be kept in Hawera till Wednesday, will arrive at Palmerston at 9 o'clock to-night, and pro. bably have to remain in the yards all night. Those who know how quickly cattle go off under these circumstances will understand that the cattle delivered at Palmerston will have a very different appearance to the cattle taken from the paddooks on Monday. Evidently the department needs more rolling stock.
The Dresden has become a household word, owing to their business growing tc such dimensions in this colony. They olaim to sell more pianos than any four, x houses in New Zealand, and this is principally owing to the instruments sup-, plied by them being of superior quality and tone.and the merits of gocd workmanship, which has placed them in the front rank of inporters. Of late they have supplied a long felt want of the musical public of Hawera and surrounding district, by launching into the musio business in real earnest and it is possible to obtain songs and music of every description. They are continually opening up up new stock in musio, pianos organs sewing and knitting machines. The local manager invites in* speotion.
Mr L. M. Taunton, of New Plymouth, has established a branch bioyole agenoy in Hawera in the shop adjoining Mr MoBride's, corner of Princes and High streets, and has opened up a large stock of BudgeWhitworth and Cleveland ladies' and gentlemen's cycles. A further consign, ment will arrive next week. The firm make a speciality of repairs, including brazing and fitting of new tubes, most of which will be done at the local agenoy. Cyoles will be stocked for hire. Machines may be had on easy time payment. Mr W. Gilmour, who has a thorough know* ledge of all classes of machines, is the manager of the Hawera branoh.
