HAWERA.
Wednesday, August 31, 1898. (Before H. W. Northcroft, Esq., S.M.) civil. Judgment went for plaintiffs in the following cases : — A. G. White (Mr Welsh) v. J. Fowler. Claim £4 2s Id. Same v. H. Reed. Claim £'6 9s. Same v t E. Stevens. Claim £1 Is.
PROHIBITION ORDER. A prohibition order against a man at ms own request was granted to apply to Hawera, Patea and Egmont licensing districts. ASSAULT. Robert Johns was charged with having assaulted Leonard 8,. Bodßon at the Hawera Brewery by striking him od the face and informant applied that defendant be bound over to keep the peace. Mr Barton appeared for informant. Informant detailed the circumstances that led to the assault which arose over defendant taking umbrage at not being allowed the keys of the brewery at night. Defendant, in consequence^ said he would leave. Informant persuaded him not to do so but on defendant not coming to work as usual he said he Would have to leave, jbut no'provocation was given. Without a moment's notice defendant struck him two heavy blows on the face, knocking him down. Defendant admitted the offence, but said he was very sorry for what he had done and did not feel any animosity now towards informant. His Worship characterised the assault ! as most cowardly, and said defendant ' should consider himself lucky he did not send him to gaol for it. If it had happened in some places the other workmen would have given him a thrashing that would have laid him up for a week. He would inflict a fin© of £5 and costs £2 8s 6d; in default a month's imprisonment. Also defendant would be { bound over to keep the peace, himself , in JJSO and two sureties of J025 each.
