A TOWN CLOCK.
The new post office is now nearing completion, and from present appearances will be a decided acquisition to the architectural beauty of the town. In the tower may be seen four apertures, intended to be filled, no doubt, by the faces of a town clock. If a clock, however, is to be placed there it will have to be done by private enterprise, as we understand the Government do not intend to make provision for one. To meet this case steps have been taken, we learn,to promote a monster art union, which should be the means of providing a large sum. This could be supplemented by subscriptions, as no doubt the majority of townspeople are public-spirited enough to do their best towards paying for what would be an almost necessary adjunct to a wellconstituted borough. A post office like ours, without a clock to chime out the hours, would be not up to date at all. There is no doubt the necessary funds could be raised if efforts were propetly directed. It is therefore to be hoped that the Hawera Town Clock will be an adjunct of the new office.
