ADDRESS TO MR MAJOR.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—At Mr Major's complimentary banquet there were many things said which, to the majority of your readers, were only hearsay. Now it is indelibly recorded in the Star for future reference if required. The illuminated address was a real work of art. The space for signatures was so arranged that borough councillors, ex-councillors, and leading citizens followed in sequence. When I signed there were some twenty-five names attached. Three councillors had signed, space being reserved for the other six, but they did not endorse the sentiments. Being an excouncillor I signed in the place reserved for such but with this proviso added — " and political opponent." By viewing the address you can verify this statement or otherwise. I would not trouble you, but having taken a lively interest in the late election as one of Mr. McGuire'a supporters, friends seeing my name attached to a memorial for Mr. Major, would think I have quickly changed my political coat. Such is not the case. I signed as a citizen, and as one I reckon Mr. Major has done good service in local affairs. The above remarks will equally apply to the secretary of Mr. McGuire's committee, Mr. J. W. Hirst. I am, (fee., John Finlay, Hawera, December 14.
