HAWERA v. STAR C.C.

These two Hawera clubs met on Saturday in the first cup match under anything but pleasant circumstances as regarded weather. Half a gale was blowing, and there were frequent showers, wetting players to the skin. Elliott winning the toss decided to bat, giving bowlers and field the disadvantage of a wet ball, but the earlier and and usually strongest bats of the team did little. The skipper played a careful innings for 12, but no good Btand was made till McCarthy, sixth man, came in. He and Warden took the score from 35 to 60, but the latter being run out other wickets fell quickly, and the board read 9, for 77. Bichdale then became associated with McCarthy, who had been scoring freely, and between them they put on no less than 51 for the last wicket, McCarthy being finally bowled by G. Bayly. McCarthy played a fine innings, marred only by a difficult chance in the slips when he had made 7 ; and Bichdale a very canny one, blocking anything but soft balls, and dropping on the latter unfailingly. He gave an easy chance at the beginning of his innings, which was not taken.

Pratt and Crawshaw were first to represent Hawera, and both played dashing cricket, runs coming fast. At 40 up Pratt gave an easy chance' fo Hobson and retired. Then the rain coming on more heavily the umpires (Bey. Mr Aitken and Mr Godfrey) decided that stumps be drawn. The following are the scores : — Star CO.— First innings. H. Elliott, b G.
