SPORTING.

[Notes by Sentinel. |

At the A J.C. Spring Meeting, Mr D. O'Brien's cheque came to £794. Messrs Cleland and McLeod took £315, Mr W. Douglas £260, and Mr Gollan £213 10s. The total amount given _ away was £12,110.

At the Hawke's Bay Trotting Club's Spring Meeting last week, the Hawera stallion Kentucky Wilks competed in the Hawke's Bay T.C. Hndicap, trotting second to Glengarry, and was again a second in the Electric Handicap. Jersey won the Hastings Cup Handicap, and was second to Glengarry in the City Stakes.

Bowshot has changed his quarters, and is now* under R. Wheeler's charge at Royal Lodge.

The wheels of the Racing Club's dray have had broader tires put on them. This will save the course considerably. At the Newmarket .(England) First October Meeting, the Jockey Club Stakes of 10,000 soys was won by H.R.H. the Prince of Wales' b c Persimmon, 3yrs, by St. Simon— Perditta 11., 9 7 (including 121b penalty), Lord Rosebery's b h Sir Visto, 10.2 (including 121b penalty) second, and Mr J. H. Houldsworth's br h Lavsno, 4yrs, by Bend 'Or— Napoli, 10.2 (including 121b penalty; third. The celebrated French steeplechase jockey, Newby, was riding in a race at Auteuil at the end of last year, when his horse collided with others, and he was thrown upon his head, and remained insensible for some time. After having tried the principal medical authorities in France without any success, he was sent to England and placed under the Ront gen rays, which showed that there was displacement of the tendons and bones of the neck. These were replaced by Professor Atkinson, of Hamilton House, Park Lane, and he is now able to resume his former profession in full vigor, and without the slighGest inconvenience.

The Eltham Racing Club is out with a very attractive programme set down for decision on December 10. Eight events are on the card, consisting of the following: — Handicap Hurdles of 15 soys, Flying Handicap 20sovs, Maiden Plate lOsovs, Pony Race 10sovs, N Eltham Cup 40sovs, Farmers' Plate 15sovs, Hurry Scurry lOsovs, Forced Handicap lOsovs. Thus, £130 is to be given away, which is a most liberal stake offering. Details of the events will found in another column.

Day Star, it is said, will not start Napier Park or Wanganui. I Napier Park races to-morrow and Wednesday.

Foxton R.C. hold a two day's meeting this year.

Day Star is now favorite for the New Zealand cup.

Esau is an unlikely starter for New Zealand Cup. At the Kurow J.C. Meeting last week he was beaten in the Cup by Lady Somnus 8.4 and Ilet 9.0 Esau carried 8.2.

The Dunedin correspondent of last week's Referee says : — I should not be surprised to find Aldershot accepting for the New Zealand Cup, and perhaps starting too. He seems to have thrown off the hind lameness which was troubling him, and is going very well. It will be remembered that ' he made most of the running in Impulse's New Zealand Cup, and was not passed until well in the straight. I do not argue from this that he has a particularly bright show this time, but the circumstance has its weight m encouraging the owner to pay up if the horse is at all well, and from what I can see he is doing much better than was expected three months ago. <

At a meeting of tbe stewards of the Wairarapa Racing Club, it was decided to call for tenders for working a totalisator for paying out on the first horse as usual ; also one for paying out on the first and second horses, and further for the working of 10s and 20s totalisators.

A further payment for the N.Z. Cup is due on Friday next. Wanganui J.C. acceptances on Friday.
