ElthamPresbyterian Church.
INAUGURAL SOCIAL. The inaugural social in connection with the Eltham Presbyterian Church was held last evening, when despite the rough weather there was a remarkably large attendance. The chair was occupied by Mr James Boddie, who gave a short opening address, detailing what steps had been taken to promote the interests of the Pr«sbytenan body there. They had now regular services in Eltham, and the prospects were very encouraging. The programme consisted of solos by Miss McAlpine, who sang "Calvary," "Eternal Rest," and the " Land o' the Leal," the latter being encored. Mr Batten sang " Freshening * Breeze" and "Polly," Mr Robert Foster contributed "The Holy City," " The Toilers," and " Thus Goes the World Around." Mr Allan gave very nicely three charming Scotch songs, and Mr McKay played two violin solo 3 exceedingly well. Miss Jessie Buchanan, of Hawera, played the various accompaniments. During the evening addresses were delivered by the Revs McDonald and Marshall. The former mentioned the fact that Mr Moir had very generously offered the Church gratis a half-acre section in the centre of the town as a site for a church, which offer was thankfully accepted and acknowledged. Very liberal refreshments were provided by the ladies of the congregation, which were, needless to say, duly appreciated. At the close of the meeting, hearty votes of thanks were passed to the ladies who provided the refreshments, and also to all the others who contributed to the success of the concert.
