THE INQUEST.

' INVEROARGILL, May 29. At the ioqaest on tbe body of tbe infant Dorothy Edith Garter, found in the garden of larobes, Winton, and with tbe mnrder of whom Minnie and Charles Dean are charged, tbe child wae traoed from the hand of her grandmother (a Obristohuroh woman), who gave it to Mrs Dsan, passing as Mrs Gray, at tbe Bluff, going to Winton, on the 30th nit., tbenoe to Dipton on the 2nd inst. by train with Mrs Dean. The child was in tbe oarriage of the evening train to Lnmsden when the gnard passed through the first and eeoond time, bnt disappeared before Lnmsden was reaohed, and at no subsequent time was it seen witb her. The titf> box which they carried was light at Dipton, tpd at Lamsden a 12 year old boy oonld soarcely carry it, and it was heavy when they returned home on Saturday without the child but with her clothes and those of a smaller baby in a parcel. The girl who went to meet Mrs Dean at the train said that she told her the box contained bnlbs from a lady from Matanra, but this was denied. The girl, by Mrs Dean's order, left tbe box all night in the rashes in a paddook and brought it to the house on Sunday. All the railway guards identified Mrs Dean, who is well known through frequent travelling, and a chemist at the Bluff, who deposed to selling laudanum to ber on tbe 80tb nit, when ehe signed tbe poison book "M. Gray," tbe writing being identified as Mrs Dean's. The inquest wiil be continned to-morrow.
