We regret to hear a rumor that tht announcement of the appointment of Mr MoEwan to be Chief Dairy Expert was premature, and that on the contrary, owing to a bitch which has ooourred, Mr MoEwan's connection with the colony is likely to toon cease. General regret will be felt at this .announcement, but the report is so circumstantial tbat we feel justified in publishing it, believing it to be entirely correct.
There is very slight change in the condition of Mr Henry McLean, but any which is noticeable is for tbe better.
Nothing is known at Government House of the rumored appointment oi Lord Glasgow to the Governorship ol New South Wales.
Hawera schoolboys defeated a com* bined team from Normanby and Matapu schools on Saturday by 53 points to nothing, Tapu scoring eight tries. Rolfe two, Nicholas one, R. Baker two, and L. Elliott two.
Tbe Gee Concert Company had a paoked house on Sunday evening, and on<?bt to have done well, for tuoagh a" collection was announced it was taken at tbe door beforehand, and the amounts which people gave were announced in Btentorian tones, and according to amounts they gave they were invited to take front or back seats. Tbe concert was very enjoyable. Mr Gee sang '• The lost chord," " Thou art passing benoa, my brother," and " Nazareth," and eacb cumber was given very finely. The other members of tbe company ably contributed items, Mr Stevenson's violin selections being the most successful. The visit of the company will be long remembersd with satisfaction by all lovers of music
A meeting of the North Island executive of tbe Daily Association was held at New Plymouth on Saturday. Among other business transacted it was decided to bold the annual meeting of North Islaod members at Hawera on sth July.
A man named MoLeod, a shepherd, employed by Boyd Brothers, sheep farmers, Taieri, was killed on Saturday through a buggy accident on Lovell's Flat.
The Wairarapa County Council are asked by Gazette notice to find a nevr name for Hawera, in tbe Forty-mile Bush.
A lady correspondent supplies a short retort of the meeting for women in the Wesleyan schoolroom on Saturday after* noon last. There was a email but appreciative audience. The necessity for women giving more attention to health subjects was clearly pointed out, with very conclusive reasons why. Tbe sad results of errors in dress were also shown by tbe help of diagrams ; also tbe necessity of food reform as well as dress reform, and that organisation itito societies was the only way of accomplishing snob reforms. Some pertinent remarks were also made about the advisability of beginning earlier to train children to understand themselves as a preventive of later errors through ignorance. It was advised that mothers should obtain suitable, simple text books to help them in giving oorreot information to tbe little ones, instead of allowing them as they grow up to gather such knowledge from impure sources Tbe value of massage treatment was dwelt upon with remarks on its history and development, and instances giren of many cases of cnre by its regular practice at borne by mothers and daughters. It is probable tbat Mrs Oollis may repeat these afternoon meeting during her stay in Hawera for a few weeks (as well as conducting classes for teaching massage), which will be duly advertised.
The Government have let a contract to Mr John Henry, of Eltbam (£3952 13s 4d), for the cutting and supply of 40,000 totara sleepers and 70.000 ft of totara bridge timber from tbe Mangaone Block.

O. W. Potter, stationmaster at Preb* bleton, Canterbury, while engaged shunting on Saturday morning, caught bis foot in the points, and being unable to extricate it was run over by a wagon, the wheels of which passed over his leg, smashing bis thigh to a jelly and injuring him internally. He was taken to the Christchuroh Hospital, bnt succumbed to the injuries sustained. He was a married man.
The Mahinapua went aground at One* hunga on Thursday night. The night was very dark, and the vesiel, which left Onebunga at 5 o'clock, after going about two miles out got stuck on a mud bank. Tbe Gairloob left shortly after 1 o'clock in the afternoon for New Plymouth, and took on tbe Mabinapua's passengers and mails. Tbe Mabinspna wbb floated off on Friday.
