STRATFORD 11. v. HAWERA JUNIORS.
The second contest between the above teams for the Junior Cup took place on the Hawera ground on Saturday, the weather being fine. Those who attended expecting to see a good game were not disappointed, the Btruggle being a moat exciting one, and being characterised by play of a high order. ' The, Hawera team were greatly weakened by tbe defeotion of F. Ooffey through illness, and his place as three-quarter was taken by Nicholas. The first spell ended with no score, though Hawera got the leather dangerously near Stratford's line on several occasions. Both teams were playing a fine game, but it was plain that Hawera's baoks were superior to those of the visitors. In the second spell Stratford made things for a time yezy awkward for the amber and blacks, but the latter's good defence prevented a score. , Hawera then assumed' the aggressive,' and a fine run by Boyd into Stratford's 25's, arid the transfer of the ball by him to D. Blytb, enabled the latter to score a 6plendid try, getting right behind the posts. The Jkick at goal was successful. The play for some time, wag of an equal nature, until one of the finest bits of passing seen on the ground occurred. From a pass by Boyd, Keith set sail for Stratford's line, and after a neat rnn be passed to Surman, who returned it to Keith, the latter sending it to Blyth, Keith again receiving it and crossing tbe line amidst tremendous cheering. The kick at goal was not successful ; and time was called shortly afterwards. Tbe Stratford team all played well, but the passing tactics 'of the Hawera backs! completely nullified their efforts. Among the Hawera hacks, Keith, A. Hunter; Blytb, and J. Winks played splendidly, 1 and J. Boyd at centre-half . was very olean in his passing. All the forwards worked well, and tbe team as a whole played an excellent game. Mr G. Syme, -jun., acted as referee in a very impartial manner, and was cheered at tbe conclusion of the game. Messrs .Taylor (Stratford) and Gnerin (Hawera) were touch-judges. Tbe Senior Cap ; match between the Star (New Plymouth) and the Hawera Clubs will take place on, Friday next, on the Hawera ground, commencing at 2 p.m. The game should be a very interesting one, in view. of the deservedly high reputation of the visitors, wbo. have not yet: met with defeat this season. The Hawera team, too, ie a strong one, and' should be capable of extending tbe Stars. The Hawera team , will consist of A. Babbage, F. 0. Smith, D. MoGregor, J. Campbell, E. Luoena, Wray Goffey (2), Livingston, Buchanan, Greig, Baker (2), J, Riddle, and Collins.
