Mr Dutbie has definitely decided not to seek re-election to the House.
Up to the present 3500 claims for enrolment have been received from women in Christchurch.

A thorough canvass of the Oatnarn district for tbe enrolment of women is being made by five men employed by the registrar.
The New South Wales Parliament was opened on Tuesday. The Governor's speech oongratulatsd hoo. members on the marked improvement in financial matters and tbe restoration of confidence.
Tuesday's Marton Mercury says:— Reports were going ronnd the town this morning that either Tongariro or Ngaurahoe was in actual eruption. Tbe report oomes from Hunterville, where, it is stated, the " booming " of the mountain conld be distinctly heard.
The premises of Martin and Co., grain merohants, of Auckland, were bnrglariouely entered on Wednesday. A Bafe containing £40 was drilled half • way through. The would-be thieves melted tbe words in candle grease on top of tbe safe, " No time."
Our Waitara correspondent writes: — I see an error of Id in the pnoe given by Crown Dairy Company at this factory, viz., 3fd should be 2sd. Since writing above note I understand that Mr. George is going to give 3d, the same as Mr. H. T. Joll and other factories are giving. Best separator batter is now worth B£d, and a well-known firm in the South Soath Island is prepared to buy on those terms for three months. This price should prove remunerative to farmers.

A swagger, whose supposed name is William Cook, was killed on the Pareora railway bridge by the 4.20 p.m. train for the South on Thursday. The driver saw the man 200 yards away, and sounded the whistle. Tbe man paid no heed, so the engines were reversed and the brakes put on ; but with no avail. The man was overtaken, the cow-catcher striking him on the leg and pitohing him head foremost on to the sleepers of the bridge, the body rebounding to the river bed below. Tbe man was picked up and sent on a trolly to tbe Timaro Hospital, where he died at 7.30, never regaining consciousness. The driver of the train thinks the man was stone deaf or deliberately paid no heed to the warning whistle.
Following is from the Feilding Star :— • I received your paper of the 3rd iost., with enclosed paragraph on the eubjeot of enlphur and diphtheria, and in reply beg to inform you that I have made enquiry on tbe subject. Dr A. Ginders says " That be never had or heard of a oaae of diphtheria during his 10 years' residence here. There have been cases of quinsy and other mild forms of throat diseases, but in all cases they could be traced to being imported irto tbe district." Farther, I would call your attention to a paragraph under tbe heading " Medical Notes," in the supplement to the New Zealand Herald of Saturday, 16th lost., where ordinary petroleum is shown to be wonderfully efficacious in tbe treatment of diphtheria.
