DAIRYMEN'S ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA.

At the third annual convention of the 'Dairymen's Association of Victoria, it was teported that since the last convention tbe ; qonncil of the association had euooe_ded in inducing tbe Railway Commissioners to alter tbe system of obarging on butter 'boxes consigned to factories by weighty an alteration which meant an average reduction of from 6d to Id per box. The bonus for the past year had been paid, but would be discontinued for the future. The Minister of Agrioulture bas made etrong efforts to reduce ocean freights to |d per lb — the rate which the steamship companies were willing to concede on condition of receiving a five years' contraot. It had not, however, been thought advisable to accept tbio condition. A view was expressed that the present shipping freight on butter— ld per lb— was too high, considering that frozen mutton waß shipped for £4 103 per ton and New Zealand butter at yd per lb. It was pointed out that it was too late to take action with respect to the present year, bnt a motion was adopted in favour of an effort to obtain a contract for a term of three years at per lb. A proposed bill to suppress the sale of batterine as butter was discussed at some length. Oae speaker declared that the beßt of Ibe exported Australian butter was churned up in England with oleomargarine, and then sold as best Australian butter. Unfortunately, there was more money to be made out of margarine than out of butter, and experts were often deceived.
