NEWS AND NOTES

On the first pass of this issue will be found particulars of interesting incidents in the career of tbe horse Mnsket, contributed by onr Waitara correspondent.

The Chief Judge of the Native Land Court is to sit at Wanganui on 27th inst. to take rehearing oases.

Captain Edwin wired at 12.55 to day : — Indications are for glass fulling again after sixteen hoars from now, with northerly winds.

Id the paragraph from the Auckland Star reprinted yesterday in referenoe to land forfeitures, the area of land selected by Mr T. Bayly should have been stated at 1100 acres, not 11,000.

NOT TO KNOW IS NOT TO HAVE bub once having used Sun Baking Powder you will never be without it, f*r if, ia the I esfc in the market, bolh for purity and price. Sold everywhere.

At Pohangina human bones and skull, in a good state of preservation, bave been found by a man while bush-felling. Judging by tbe positiou the skeleton was in, moßt probably death was met while the man was in a sitting position.

Mr Finn, resident agent of tbe New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, has been informed from bead quarters that " cable advices state that reconstruction scheme drafted and approved in London."

The District Court sits to-morrow, and tbe actions Micheli v. Stratford County Council and Dunn v. Oldham are set down for hearing. The bankruptcy business includes the public examination of Newton Fairs, and an application to be made by Mr Matthews for an order of discharge in his favour. Messis Wallis, Sons and Co., London (A. H. Moore, Opunake, New Zealand representative), report, under date Aug. 4: — Tbe present prices of butter are as follows: FiDest Danish, 1203; French, 120s: Dutch. 116s ; Irish, 112s. The-e are very good prospects for next season. We expect a good year for consignments. The latest additions to Taranaki dairy, men are Messrs MoPhillipßros., who have leased part of the land of Mr T. Scott, of Waimate. They come immediately from Anckland, where they have been in business in dairying for some time, but their knowledge and experience was in the first place gained in Ireland, famous for good dairy produce. From Auckland, Messrs McPhillip Bros, have brought down a complete plant and seventy cows, the results of long and careful seleotion, horses, labour, &c. ; and intend going in for dairying in a tboroughly systematic manner. During the 24 hours ended at 8 a.m. to-day 2*50 inohes rain were registered. This coming on top of the heavy fall on Saturday and Sunday has made the roads very bad again. The ram was rather curiously irregular. At Otakeho tbe fall was 2*7; at Manaia, 2*4; at Inaba, about 3 inches. Judging by tbe quantity of water lying on the surface it wonld

have been supposed that the fall waß much heavier than the register shows, but owing to previous rain perhaps the ground was less receptive. The Inaba was very highly in flood, and on the Main South road the crossing was a couple of feet under water. On the Inaba road going up to Mr Foreman's a culvert haß burst, and many roads were flooded. , The Glover road between the saleyards and the Nornaanby road was a long canal. In reference to the entertainment announced for this evening an exchange reports of it in another town : — There was an excellent attendance at the Theatre Royal last evening to witness the second entertainment given by the Good Samaritan Variety Troupe, notwithstanding the charge for admission. The dummips, manipulated by Mr J. S. Bryant, kept everyone in a continual bubble of laughter. Mr Bryant is, without doubt, the best ventriloquist that has yet been on the stage in this town. All the songs by tbe several other artists were well rendered, and encores were frequent. A capital Bong by Mr Bryant fairly brought down the house, the applause being simply dealening. A short time ago W8 had a paragraph relative to the late Lucy D'Alton's (Takiora) illness in the hospital at New Plymouth. We hear tbat she died there on Sunday last. Deceased had played many parts in her time, and as far back as 1868 she was guide to the forces during the war with Titokowaru, and haa since then resided on her property on the Hastings road. She bad her good qualities, being good-natured to a degree, and her familiar form will be misped. For some time she was in the employ of the Government of the day*- Her remains were buried in the Henui cemetery near New Plymouth, the Yen. Archdeacon Govett reading the impressive service of the Church of England. At the annual meeting of the Free Association of Employers and Workmen of Hawke's Bay, the report stated that the working members had increased to 2083. The income w a9 £831, and the expenditure £389, the chief item being £100 paid to working members who met with accidents during the year. The balance ia hand was £525. Situations had been found for 193 members, making a total of 450 since the formation of the association. There was some discussion on a proposal to charge working members witu a small membership fee, nothing now being asked from them, but no alteration was made. [This society was formed as the outcome of disputes when strikes were general in tbe oolony some three years ago, and, as indicated above, has been of great benefit to both employer and worker. It has proved that a seemingly difficult association oat\ be worked profitably and Bmoothly.J Messrs Newcomb & Massey draw attention to reduced lines in drapery.
