CHRISTCHURCH, July 31.

3obn OUiver, a very o\d settler, died to -day, aged 61. He arrived here in 1658, aod held many offices in tbs Canterbury Provinoia\ Conocil. He was Provincial Secretary, and afterwards Speaker. On his retirement from tbat position be was appointed Provincial Auditor, a position be beld until tbe abolition of provinces, and subsequently beld a somewhat similar position under tbe General Government. For Borne years he was Magistrate at Gbristcbnrob and Lyttelton.
