COLONEL FOX'S REPORT.
GREAT PRAISE FOR HAWERA MOUNTED RIFLES. [SPECIAL TO STAB.] WELLINGTON, July 1. Colonel Fox's report on tbe volunteer forces is of a sweeping character, and would probably have been more effective I had it been in the nature of a departmental report, which could have been treated confidentially instead of being made to the Governor and laid on the table of Parliament hy oommand. No less than 41 volunteer corps are recommended for disbandment, including the Manobester and Albert Rifles in the Wanganui district! I Speaking of tbe Hawera Mounted Rifles, 1 he describes Captain Johnston as a good officer, and judges tbat Lieuts. Duckworth and Gibson will be good officers with praotioe. The men are a very fine body, and have a good stamp of horses. Tbe riding was good throughout. Colonel Fox considers more practice is required in mounting and dismounting and in detail generally, but as the corps has only been in existence during two trainings, tht first of wbioh was not in uniform, and tbe second spoilt by rain on four days, a high state of efficiency could not be expected. He considers the Hawera Mounted Rifles likely to be a good corps.
