EGMONT COUNTY BILL.
Oq Thursday last, at Messrs Nolan, Tonks and Co.'s sale, at Manaia, a petition against the promotion of the Egmont County Bill was very largely signed. Mr A. C. Milne had the petition in band, of whioh the following is a oopy : " Petition of landowners and occupiers resident in Waimate Riding of the County of Hawera, referred to in clause 3 of the Egmont County Bill, sboweth : Wbereas there is a bill before jour honorable House intituled ' An Act for the constitrj. tion of Egmonfc County,' by which it is proposed to sever all that portion of the aforesaid Waimate riding west of tbe Eapuni river, in which we reside, from the Hawera county, in order to form with the Parihaka Riding of tbe County of Taranaki a new county : Now this petition witnesseth tbat in our opinion such a course would be detrimental to our interests in every respeot : We therefore therefore humbly pray tbat your honorable House will reject tbe bill. And your petitioners will ever pray." One of the main reasons urged against the proposed measure was the fact that all the Main South road from tbe Kapuni westward was in a bad state of repair, and that it was inadvisable to sever Waimate until this portion had its fair share of expenditure. Judging by tbe unanimity expressed by those requested to sign at the sale there appears to be a itrong feeling amongst Waimate settlers against the measure at present.
