On Wednesday next (Queen's Birthday) the second giand annual military tournament of the Hawera Mounted Rifles will take place, and judging by tbe ioterest already taken the affair should be eminently successful. The presence of many members of tbe Wairoa Mounted Rifles will add to the interest, and will also render the various contests more exciting. The programme (which has been for some time appearing in our columns) consists of fourteen events, including hurdle and flat races, etc., and tbe comio element will be supplied in the evergreen " Dick Turpin's Ride to York " and the Cigar and Umbrella Race, both of which should be provocative of much mirtb. The Hawera Band will be in attendance to enliven tbe proceedings ; and with fine weather the tournament should be largely attended. Considerable confusion was caused in one of tbe churches last evening. Whilst service was proceeding, the melodious vocal strains of a oanine in distress were beard, and as they came nearer and nearer people began to think that something desperate had happened. Suddenly a tremendous row was heard at the door, and in rushed a half-demented dog with a large tin-can affixed to its tail. Tbe yelps of the unfortunate animal and accom* panying noise from the can were almost deafening. The course traversed was up one aisle and down the other, and then round again, but in the last circle one or two persons succeeded in arresting tbe dog's career and removing the can, which afforded much apparent relief to the " kuri." The suddenness of the affair caused quite a number of persons in tbe church to spring to their feet ; and lor some time after quietness was restored many of those preEent could scarcely restrain their laughter. Fiilis* circus and menagerie are to play at Hawera on Friday, 2nd June, giving two performances. H. J. Petbier, of the Pioneer Cycle Clab, Christohurch, has put up the New Zealand road record for 100 miles. He did the distance in 6b. 38m. 465., including stoppages. Tbe course was the nsual 50 miles one to Leeston and back, done twice.
