SPORTING. EGMONT E.C. WINTER MEETING.

I Tbident.J To-morrow the above meeting will be held, and as the weather has taken up, it is pretty safe to predict that there will i be a representative gathering to witness the racing. The going will be heavy, which will be in favor of the light weight division . The ball opens with the Hurdle Eace, and the following horses are engaged: — sfc. lb. st.lb. Couranto ... 11 13 Jacob ... 9 0 Empire ... 10 12 Bradshaw... 9 0 Chester ... 10 6 Union Jack 9 0 Disturbance 911 I do not fancy Couranto can give Empire so much weight, but I expect to see the race fought out between the pair. Jacob is reported to be in good fettle, and served by his light weight, he may win. I shall place them — Empiee Couranto Jacob There is a field of seven for the Hack Hurdles, made up of the following : — st. lb. St. lbAuroa ... 11 3 Strike ... 9 10 Sister ...10 7 Maori 80y... 9 O Cingalee ... 10 3 Belle ... 9 0 Despised ... 9 10 j The order of finish I think will be— Auboa Sister Despised The next race on the list is the Trial Steeplechase, and those engaged are — st.lb. st.lb. Waterbury 11 3 Active ... 9 9 Iroquois ... 10 9 Eeview ... 9 7 Disturbance 10 5 Darebin ... 9 7 Allegretto... 10 2 Manine ... 9 7 Union Jack 10 2 Otakeho ... 9 7 Bradshaw... 9 12 Rex ... 9 7 Karewa ... 911 I am quite in the dark with regard to the jumping capabilities of most of the horses engaged in the foregoing race. If Waterbury takes the jumps, he can be looked upon as being dangerous. Allegretto's show is thought much of. Karewa, I am told, has not been acquitting himself satisfactorily of late. A horse that is spoken well of is Manine. Otakeho is a likely horse ; he jumps well, I am told, and is endowed with a good bit of pace. To make a selection, I favor the chances of — Allegretto Union Jack Otakbho The First Hack Flat has a good field of eleven, made up thus : — st.lb. silb. Bonovoree ... 8 9 Armoury ... 7 8 War Cry ... 8 4 Lord John ... 7 7 Chatterbox ... 8 2 Rewa ... 7 4 Shiela ... 8 O Ajax ... 7 2 Kai Iwi Lady 712 Starlight ... 613 Countess ... 7 9 My selection is— Was Cry bonovoeeb Countess Armoury has a handy weight, and ought to be pretty near at the finish. The Egmont Steeplechase comes next in order, and the horses in it are— st. lb. St. lb. Shillelagh... 11 9 Jacob ... 911 Empire ... 10 9 Allegretto ... 9 7 Booties ... 10 7 Karewa ... 9 7 Chester ... 10 5 Darebin ... 9 7 Auckland... 10 2 King Rose ... 9 7 Iroquois ... 912 J Auckland, I imagine, will not be a starfcer, his name at time of nomination having been on the unpaid, forfeit list. When the weights appeared for this race, I selected Shillelagh as likely to furnish the winner, and I see no reason for altering that opinion, although I have been told that the horse is a bit backward, not having been taken up long. Booties should run well forward, and another horse I have a liking for is Iroquois. I will place them — Shillelagh Bootles Iboquois King Rose has been mentioned as having a big say in the decision of the Egmont Steeplechase of 1893. The following constitute the field for the Second Hack Flat :— silb. sfc. lb. Bonovoree ... 9 O Pennant ... 7 9 Chatterbox... 8 5 Cutlass ... 7 7 Nugget ... 8 2 Derry ... 7 6 "Waipiro ... 8 0 Ajax ... 7 4 Countess ... 8 0 Starlight ... 7 O Shiela ... 8 0 Vienne .:. 6 12 Kai Iwi Lady 7 12 Ling ... 6 12 Rewa ... 7 12 Bell ... 610 Armoury ... 7 9 King Alfred 610 Despised ... 7 9 Campasph ... 610 The result of this race will probably be affected by the running in the First Hack Race, the winner of which will incur a 71b penalty. «, The Final Steeplechase can be left alone for the present, the weights for which will be declared after the Egmont Steeplechase has been run.
