FOOTBALL. ELTHAM V. HAWERA.

Owing to the downpour of rain on Saturday, tbe Management Committee of tbe T.B.F.U. decided to postpone the cup fixtures for tbe day, and the various teams were at once advised. The Eltbam team, however, arrived by the lliZO train, and wore prepared to play. They stated that their railway tickets had been purchased prior to receiving tbe notion of postponement, and they deoided to brave the, elements. The Hawera men, with one or two exceptions, were aware of the postponement, but players were bunted up, and twelve men were got together. The match was played in the midst of tbe hbavy rain, one or two local men turning up after the commencement of the game. Tbe play was not very brilliant, the heavy rate cooling tbe ardor of even the most red-hot devotees of tbe noble game. Hawera put up a score oi 23 points to Eltbam's nil ; and the teams emerged from the deciding ground, soaked and covered with mud, the only difference I being that the Hawera men were wrapped in a cloak of honor, which, however, they quickly changed for something more watertight and comfortable. Waverley beat Kaierau (Wanganui) on Saturday by a goal from a mark, » potted goal, and three tries to nil.
