A weasel was yesterday killed by a do^ of Mr J. Goodson at the Inaha, about two or three miles fiom Manaia, along the South road. This is the first, as far as I am aware, that has been killed on the Plains. — Manaia correspondent.
We have been requested to point out that tbe Commissioners of Crown Lands have not complied with the Act which requires them to exhibit at all post offices the terms of the Act of last session relating to old soldier ' claims. The time for sending in claim > closes at tbe end of this month.
At Wednesday's meeting of Tamnaki Education Board Miss C. Hobbs' resignation as teacher of the Bird Road School wa9 accepted, and steps will be taken to fill the vacancy. The Opunake School Committee notified tbe board that in consequeacs of the prevalence of whooping cough the school had been closed for a fort night. The board sanctioned the notion of the committee. Mr. W. A. McCntoban wrote, offering to supply a room for school purposes, and board and residence to the teacher, if the board would permit a school being held at Tongaporutu. It was decided to in/orm tbe applicant that the board cannot see its way at present to provide school accommodation for ten children.

At a meeting of tbe vestry of St. Mary's Church held on Thursday it was resolved tbat tbe question of farther seating accommodation in the church be remitted to a meeting of the parishioners for consideration at an early date.
A farewell social and dnnce is to be given to Mr Cleary, of Patea, on Monday next. A pnree of sovereigns is to be given htm as a slight recognition of tbe appreciation of tbe subscribers of bis uniform courtesy in bis business capacity during tbe term of his office as stationmaster at Patea ; and a presentation is also to be made to Mrs Clearv.
A return has been prepared showing tbe rainfall at different places between Wellington and New Plymouth during the 24 hours ending 9.30 a.m. on Saturday, Hth ioßt., the occasion of tbe flood here. The return shows that the heaviest rainfall waa at tbe Karori Reservoir, where B'so inches of water fell in tbe 24 hours ; Wainui-o-mata Reservoir coming next with Bj4o8 j 4O inches ; and Hawera third highest with 7fßo7 f BO inches. Inglewood was 607 inches.
A meeting of tbe Hawera Musical Society was held in tbe side room ot tbe Town Hall on Monday evening. About 45 members were present ; and Mr A. J. Wbittaker was voted to the chair. Rules for tbe guidance of the society were confirmed, and seven or eight new members proposed. After the meeting, a practice was held, under the baton of Mr J. Higbam, when several obornses from "Rose Maiden" were gone through. It was decided to at once obtain copies of " Pirates of Penzance," 00 that ths opera may be put; in band by next Thursday tveaing.
They held a very enjoyable Maori raoe meeting up tbe line tbe other day — one that was a novelty in its way, /or it was run by Maoris, the animals were Maori weeds, the jockeys dark in color, and tbe officials were as black as the ace of spades. The Maori Carbines that were saddled up for the varions events were not beautiei to gaze upon, but there was as much preparation made in regard to them as though they were going out for a Melbourne Cup. The entrance fee was a couple of bags of grain for each race, with an acceptance of one sack. The flrßt horse got so many sacks and the second so many. There was a five shilling " equahsator " on the ground, on which those present could baok their fancies. A spieler who attended the races, and who introduced a game of" pop it down gents," was told by the stewards to pop himself outside. He popped. — Napier Telegraph.
