Stratford and Ngaire.

(PKOMOCBOWN CORRESPONDENT.) Invitations for candidates to come forward aud seek election to tbe Town Board have again resulted fruitlessly, no one apparently being covetous of the "honour. This is not, of course, as it should be, and tbe circumstance ib so unusual that one is obliged to seek fora

reason for it. There is a theory to acoount • for it, which one is not, however, disposed to ptoolaku from the house topß. Let us hope that next general election of the board will result in a more healthy state

Of things coming about. One matter in the town which seems to -require attention as early as possible is a fence irom (be side of the bridge aoross j4he en.d of the new foundation to prevent people irom riding or driving down a steep Sigh bank into the river in tbe dark. The road is formed and metalled fall width, bat the bridge is at the extreme edge of the road. Anyone therefore who kept the centre of the street wouia come to very sarioaß grief, as tbe height from tbe river is considerable. It is probably a County Council matter, bat it requires early attention from someone. Dr. Paget has entered into partnership with Dr. Valintine, and one or other of the firm will now be always resident in Stratford. It will fill a great want, as Dr. Valintine's practice was bo extensive And tbe distances he frequently had to travel bo great, that there was considerable uncertainty attending his visits at Stratford. The new doctor brings high qualifications with him, I learn. It is said that Watkins 1 new store is •boat to be converted into ye pnb. Wanganni (I was going to write another name) will have to look to its laurels. It would be an interesting calculation as to how much money and misery it takeß to keep a fall-sized coantrv hotel running. Some of the advocates of woman franchise openly boast tbat as soon as they get it they will pot a stop to tbe sale of liquor by retail. Somebody evidently does not believe that they are going to get it very Boon. . . A petition has been sent in to the authorities asking that the Post office may be kept open in tbe evening from 7 to 8. There is no doubt that it will be a great convenience, bat if it is. done some means 6honld be devised of giving the employees an afternoon off doty daring Jhe week to make an for it. * The many friends of Mr. W. G. Malone Will be glad to learn that he has passed bis examination' in law, and may be now soon expected to commence practice. Talking of that, there is our new courthouse for which money was voted on the Estimates last session? The present State of things ia very dieagreeable, and the sooner proper accomodation is provided, tbe better. Jl capital enterprise has been inaugurated by a Rowan road settler who now rnnß an express twice a week between there and Stratford. If the settlers beyond Rowan road will get their part of Opunake road done we shall soon have ooaoh traffic through between Opunake and! Stratford. . ♦Jbijjgs at the Cardiff Dairy Factory continue to run smoothly, the supply keening up at over 1400 gallons a day. No returns have yet been received from borne as to this season's make, bat may «oon be expected. A. good many conveniences have been provided at the factory vbich were wanting last year, the result being a considerable lightening of tbe work to tbe employees.
