DOBSON-KENNEDY COMP'Y.
•> _ THE LANCASHIRE LASS. The first of a series of three entertainments at Hawera by the above favorite company took place last night before a good audience. Mr Byron's romantic and sensational four-act play was well staged and performed throughout, and appropriate scenery and effects were brought into use. The ever-popular J. J. Kennedy received quite an ovation from the audience when he first appeared on tbe stage, and one of the best of his many excellent impersonations is certainly the one essayed last night; for as i " A party by the name of Johnson " he l kept his audience thoroughly amused by the large amount of spontaneous humor extracted, and the more telling points I were readily seized by the audience and heartily applauded. Miss Lily Hill, as the herbine of the piece, portrayed the j character very well, but the lady has , been 6een more at borne in other dramas, as, for instance, the adventuress in 11 Little Lord FauntJeroy." But her part was a long; and difficult one. Of Mr F. Norton's clever and versatile acting it ' would be hard to speak in too high terms : he seems always to be allotted -parts for which he is eminently suited I to fill. His acting last night of the [ stylish adventurer, and later of the ', hunted-down and famished convict, wore very real "and natural. Mr Norton was frequently hooted, a sufficient guarantee of quality, etc. Pleasant recollections were renewed with Miss Idrene Thornton, though tbe characted assumed, that of a Gipsy, did not afford her much scope to display her ability ; and Misß Violet ' Sheridan (her first appearance here) 1 created a favorable impression as old 1 Danville's pretty daughter. Mr Dobson excellently performed the part of the young carpenter whose blighted love is answerable for bis downward career of dissipation. The other characters of the . piece were well snstained by Messrs Joe . Kennedy, Douglas, Ingleson, and W. E. ' Jermyn. An effective pier scene was presented. Interest in the drama was 1 sustained throughout, and the prinoipal actors bad frequently to bow to flattering j recalls before the curtain, j To-night the company will stage the capital comedy "Our Boys," in three acts. A full caste, including Mrs f Walter Hill, an actress of repute, will take part. A large audience may be expected. For Friday night Bulwer Lytton's j sterling play " The Lady of Lyons "is announced.
