Weddell (of Weddell and Co., the well-known meat salesmen), Oscar de Satze, director of the Union Mortgage and Agenoy Company, of Australia, R. Gray, and Villiers Brown have gone to Havre to inspect the Otaramara's beef. The Frenoh Minister for War and Agent is expected also to be present to test tbe usefulness of the meat for army purposes. Two British subjects have been saved rom tbe wreok of the steamer Ronmania after being in the water eight hours. They were quite naked when resoued and thoroughly exhansted. All the women and children on board were drowned. Snider, a Sydney Socialist, addressed a meeting of unemployed at Tower Hill to-day. He earnestly enjoined tbem to show a bold front to tho capitalist. The same misery and want he had seen all over tbe world, and now was tbe time to take decisive aotion to secure definite relief. Wheat is being sold in New York below 76 cents, tbe lowest price ever known. It is believed that the crop exceeds tbe largest estimates. BERLIN, October 81. Obituary — Queen Dowager of Wurtemburg. Iv an interview, Bismarck again affitmed his belief that Russia could safely occupy Constantinople in defiance of the rest of the European powers. VIENNA, October 81. The press of thi& city is intensely bitter against Bismarck on account of his state* ment regarding Russia and Constantinople and deolares he is an open opponent Of Austria and England. SYDNEY, November 1. Addressing a public meeting at Broken Hill, several speakers denounced tbe police for brutality in arresting men who were only the worse of liquor. The Rev. Chalmers was conseorated as Bishop of Goulbourn to-day. Leading church dignitaries of Australia were present at the ceremony, which was an impressive one. MELBOURNE, November 1. The Intercolonial Conference of Surveyors has opened, Mr. R. H. 3. Ellery Rove, astronomer, of Viotoria, presiding. Resolutions were carried affirming the desirableness of a uniform examination for surveyors in the various colonies, and the conference is now discussing tbe details with a view of giving praotical effect to tbe resolution. BRISBANE, November 1. Tbe Crown bas deoided to proaeoute the Howard-Smith Steamship Company for breach of the Dividend Aot in not making the declarations required from a company trading in Queensland. The penalties claimed amount to £14,000. NEW YORK, October 31. Tbe gale blowing at Milwaukee daring the fire carried the burning timbers a considerable distance. The firemen were powerless to subdue the flames. A panic resulted, and tbe people fled and abandoned their possessions. Merchants are in a terrible plight. The fire is said to have otiginated through an explosion in some oil stores. Five deaths are reported. Serious floods have been experienced in Mexico, and fifty persons drowned. During a political riot in Raleigh, North Carolina, five persons were killed. PARIS, October 31. In tbe Chamber of Deputies, M. Cle'tnenceau stated that he had pledged himself to obtain pardon for those imprisoned for riotous behaviour during the labor difficulties. He bad induced friends of the prisoners to resume petitions for their release. In the course of his request, M. Clemenc9au claimed that tbe labor strife had resulted in democratic victory throughout tbe world. SYDNEY, November 1. At a meeting to-night nearly 10,000 people 'were present. Resolutions were carried condemning the sentences passed on strikers and it was deoided to prepare petitions for mitigation ot tbe sentences. A little disturbance occurred amongst the small sections of the crowd. A large body of polioe and mounted troopers were present and suoceeded in maintaining order during the evening. A guard was placed over Parliament House.
