NEWS AND NOTES.

The Stratford paper thinks the holding of ooucty council meetings in an hotel is an objectionable practice. It is likely that the salary of the mayor of Wellington will be inoreased from £105 to £350 per year. It may not be known that there is a flourishing little village in the Pahiatua district rejoicing in the name of Ballance. It is understood that Mr H.A. Brunette, for the past eight or nine years a member of the Hawera Band, and later secretary, has resigned membership. The average attendance of children at the Hawera School for the June quarter in 1878 was 54; and for the March quarter in 1892, 119 ; Palmerstou, 81 — 700 ; and Turakina, 71—53. The Otago Central Railway League ia showing great activity in urging the connection of the line, A branch with 400 members has been formed at Cromwell, and another is being formed at Paisley, Reynolds and Co., of Auckland, proprietors of the Inglewood Dairy Factory, are granting a bonus of Jd per gallon upon all milk supplied from 21st May, with a probability of higher prices for milk next year. Efforts are still being made to get the barque Weatbersfield off the Otaki beach, where she ran ashore over two years ago. Last week she was removed about two feet, and the men engaged in the work are sanguine in floating her off. Following in the wake of other West Coast towns, Hawera is to have a special evangelistic mission, which will be oonducted by the Rev. A. O. Williams, of Wanganui. This gentleman has recently successfully conducted missions j>t Palmerston North and Patea. , .f. f The Ovide Musin Concert Company, according to the Auckland telegrams, is undoubtedly the most talented that haß ever visited New Zealand. The box-plan is now open, and seats are fast being reserved. With this issue we enclose circular giving a few particulars of this company's Bucoess. Owing to the very limited spaoe, and in anticipation of a large number of visitors from the surrounding district, the management has decided to issue only a very limited number of one shilling tickets, and these only must be obtained through the box-office (Messrs. Newton Fairs and Co.) prior to 29th injtj : Several communications have reacbeqj /us, all in the same direotion as regards statement, respecting Mr. McGuire's meeting at Eltham on Saturday week. They are, however, not from our ordinary correspondents, and as there could be little new to add to the many addresses which Mr. McGuire has delivered throughout the electorate, we^oaoDoi-seg our way to devote Bp.&ce--"lo what; app&uv tp be caricatures of electoral proceedings^ than -flocer statements oi fact. The several writers will therefore have to excuse any further notice of what may now be deemed too stale, and in many respectfi for publication. "■ — ' As confirmatory of Rev. Mr. Beecroft's experiences in London, we quote that Dr. Moorbouse, Bishop of Manchester, once remarked that he considered the peaceable condition of the East End of London a remarkable proot of an Englishman's respect for the majesty of law. The sufferings of hundreds of thousands of the people were so terrible, and their numberß so overwhelming, that the fact that they passed half-starved lives in the wealthiest city in the world without endeavoring to violently possess themselves of the treasures with which stately houses and magnificent warehouses were orammed, was, in the bishop's opinion, a convincing proof of the natural love for law and order for which his countrymen have always been distinguished. Whan Mr. Buick, M.H.R., was in Gisborne, a scheme was placed before him by Mr. Malcolm McLeod, which had for its object the overcoming of the initial difficulties which Bettlers with limited capital have to enoounter, with especial regard to Settlement Associations. The principal feature is at the very outset to provide a store with a capable man in charge, whence the settlers might procure every necessary in pioneering work, such storeß to be advanced on the Hecurity of work already done, and to be paid for on suoh terms as may be arranged, and other measures for rendering assistance to the struggling settlers, so that they may tids over their troubles. Mr. McLeod has received an encouraging reply from the Premier, who states that he has recommended it strongly to the Minister for Lands, and hopes for satisfactory results. Hawera is assuredly in for treats as regards shows at the present time, as may be judged by our advertising columns, the first to appear being Carl Hertz and the Empire Company, which is a marvellous combination of magic and music. A concise notice of the career of Carl Hertz appeared in the Canterbury Press, from which it appears he started in the profess;on at the age of fourteen years, in San Francisco, his native place ; but at school, prior to this early success before the public, he had used to go through tricks instead of attending to his lessons. From that time to the present he has been a moving mystery and object of wonderment in all civilised quarters of the globe, gaining experience and expertness all the time, and adding illusion to illusion till, long ago, he earned the title of " King of Cards" and a M Wizard" of the highest order. At Mexico, in Miseouri.so lone as 1880, "He's a sleek one " was the introduction to a moet favorable notice on " the young Californian necromancer." At Hull, England, in 1883, in the leading journal of that city he was thus noticed :—": — " Carl Hertz, with a German name but ' some considerable ' Yankee intonation and many Yankee idiomß, is a marvellous manipulator of 1 pasteboard ' and ' packs,' and shuffles the oards so as to fully earn his title of 1 King of Cards,' and a ' trump ' at feats of legerdemain ; at all events, I should not care to be his opponent in a band of crib. He finished his show with a wonderfnl illusion, the disappearance from bis bonds in full view of the audience of a wire cage with a live canary inside, and this without covering with a cloth or cap or any other aid, the trick being worked with lightninglike dexterity and what appeared to be like necromantic art." So far as the performer is conoerned, this is now ancient history, since when he has made great advanoes in his speciality lines, notably the manackled assistant, who so mys- 1 teriously disappears, to turn up again unfettered. This is but a portion of the entertainment, in which " The Fairy Four" are not reckoned, but who, as terpsichorian performers, rank high. The latest among best songs are among the list of attractions, a fuller list of which will be found in advertisement. A successful season has just been concluded at Auckland. On the lourth page of this issue will be found a sketch of one of Mr. £ Hertz's mysterious tricks. c Mr J. E. Wilson is holding a cheap sale \ of furniture for one week only. fc Punehu, near Opunake. —We remind _ settlers of the sale of land and stock to be held to-morrow on behalf of Mr Strauchan . by Nolan, Tonks and Co. Mr. D. has removed to house ' l next Mr. Henderson's, sadiler/f-Adyt. c
