White and Taiaroa collared the visitors' bowling, makmg respectively 53 and 20, and the innings totalled 105. Canterbury could only put up 47, but had to bat on a greasy wicket owing to rain having fallen before they went in.

We have received a rather long letter from Mr. Barleyman on the now-settled action as to ownership of the bed of the river, but tbe only point is that the council incurred unnecessary coats, and he will not pay them. That is a matter for Mr. Barleyman and tbe council to fight out, and not for discussion in our columns.

Mr. G. A. Hurley, of Manaia, has inaugurated a tennis olub for the larger girls attending the Manaia School. There is great enthusiasm amongst the members, and every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon (the practice days) are looked forward to with great pleasure by the girls. The parents, as well as the children themselves, owe Mr. Havley their thanks for the trouble hs has gone to in the matter. This much can be said of it, that it is quite a success.

A cable stated the other day that the Paris Anarchists threatened the life of a restaurant waiter who had assisted in Bavachal's arrest. ' Another cable gives the following information : — The arrest ot Eavachal was effected through the agency of a waiter in a wine shop which he frequented. The Commissioner of Police was informed of Eavachal's visits to this wine shop, and paid the waiter a large sum of money for information which led to the arrest. Tbe waiter is to be decorated with the Legion of Honor.

Of all the disagreeable persons in society few try one's patience more severely than loud-mouthed persons who think that to be emphatic; they must address you in tones of thunder. There are persons who, apparently, are not content with making an observation tell upon your mind unless it tells upon your nerves also. They drive the words through the conversation like wedges, and, when they raise their voices, you feel a tiDgling at your fingers' ends like that on touching a galvanic wire. When such persons have a controversial turn of mind the misery they inflict is exquisite. — Chicago Standard.

The " lasses' band " conneoted with the Salvation Army, which is just now touring the North Island, performed last evening at tbe Hawera branch's house of meeting. There waß a large audience, the room being quite crowded. The young women, who numbered twelve, proved themselves to be good musicians, playing brass and string instruments with equal ability. Their singing, too, was an excellent feature of the meeting, a novelty being the rendering of a solo accompanied by the brass band, the singer's voice withal being distinctly audible. Captain Ashley, who has recently been transferred to Hawera, is a good " speakeress," and made an earnest appeal.

On Monday, Messrs. Arthur and Sons had on view a very handsome piece of furniture made to tbe order of a gentleman living in the district. It is a dressing table in polished rimu, and is known as a Duchess- pedestal toilet table, with knee recess. It is highly polished, but handsomely figured and inoised with dark walnut scroll and fluting. There are two drawers above tbe table on each side of a large levelled plate-glass mirror; below the table on tbe frieze there are five drawers, as well as cupboards on the lower pedestals. AH tbe drawers have neat nickel drawer-pulls. The table and stand measure Bft 9in x 22in, and about sft in height over all, and the whole formsa very substantial and ornamental piece of furnisure.

One of the best farmers in this district is (says tbe Pahiatua Star) of opinion that the top price for young cattle has not yet been reached. He bases his opinion chiefly on two facts (1) The large area of bush land that has been burned off this year, on which tbe grass is already sown ; and (2) Tbe large number of oattle that have been taken out of tbe district during the past few months. Our farming friend, who is in this case a practiser as well as a preacher, thinks that about tbe best use to which our bush land can be put at present is breeding cattle, for as long as large areas of bush country continue to be brought under cultivation each year, the prices must keep up to, even if they do exoeed tbe rates that have been ruling for the past few months.

Eefeiring io the need for studying the conditions necessary to tbe suooessfal carriage of perishable exports the New Zealand Times says : — Adireotor arranged to send Home a trial shipment of potatoes, did nothing in particular to study the conditions, failed, and declared tbe gate of British tortune closed for evermore against the New Zealand potato. He put himself on the level of Te Whiti, who once said, 1 The potato is cooked.' But tbe leading fact of the situation is that the companies must find out a way of oarrying potatoes from the country where they are so much waste to tbe great centres of consumption whiob, at certain seasons, are ready to pay good prioes for them. The system of deciding by perfanctory experiment is not tbe way to make discoveries. Disoovery is a painful, laborious, energetic process, involving much shrewdness, perseverance, and enterprise. Mr. Hanlon has given valuable advice to the sfafp owners about the proper method of carrying fruit. Who will give tbe same kind of advice about roots ? When the right man oomes forward be will find there is money in tbe trade for all concerned.

The annual ball at Eltham in connection with the Eltham Lodge of Oddfellows, is to be held on Friday evening next.

The Hawera and West Coast Drapery Co announce in this issue their season's show, and we are assured by the Manager that no pains have been spared to put before the public, really good and fashionable goods, equal to the large centres. Their buyer has visited all the warehouses, and has obtained for this season exceptionally good value, as also style and quality. The Manager also desires the settlers to note that it is simply impossible to import in a small way and obtain the varied style, excellence, and quality that the Colonial markets offer. — Advt.

The writ for Bruce seat has been issued and is returnable on 14th instant.

A new lighthouse is to be commenoed at once, on Stephens Island, a wcrk. whioh has for years been urged on successive Governments as necessary.

A petition is in course of signature by women of Hawera in favor of women's suffrage. In some parts of the colony, petitions are being promoted against the extension asked for, so that as it is to be & battle of petitions persons having views on the sdbject ebonld not fail to attaoh tbeir signatures.

There was a sheep dog trial in Hawke's Bay the other day, and tbe Telegraph reports that shepherds using strong language were to be disqualified. The dogs did not understand it, and waited in vain for tbe familiar terms tbat formerly gave them a hint whether they were doing right or wrong. It was very bard on tbe poor shepherds.

Tbe following will represent the Hawera and Star Clubs in the matoh versus Waimate Orphans, to be played at Hawera next Saturday, viz. : — G. Bayly, Soutbey, Riddiford, Goodson, Lucena, Jackson, Westenra, Syme, Burlace, Elliott, and Gun thorp. The Waimate Orphans will be : — Shove, Hilles, Hugh Good, A. Good, Eelling, Hurley, A. An accident, wbich very nearly bad most serious results, oocurred to-day. A four-horse waggon belonging to Messrs. Davenport, of Otakebo. had discharged a load at the railway station, and was being driven townwards, and had just reached the crossing on the Tawhiti road, when tbe train from Wangaaui came along. The driver of the waggon had not beard the whistle, probably owing to some machinery being at work close at band, and buildings in connection with Mr Sontbey's business obsoured his view of tbe railway line south-east of the road. Dunn, the driver, palled sharply at his horses when he saw the engine, but in a second the engine was at tbe noses of the leaders, and though their speed had been checked their forward movement could not be entirely stopped, and one horse was struck by the engine. The team swerved round violently and twißted the foreoarriage of the waggon and to some degree smashed it up. The horse which was struck was very badly lacerated. Tbe driver, we understand, fortunately was not hurt. It is almost a miracle that the whole concern, including driver, was not smashed np. No blame, we suppose, can be attaohed either to the driver of the engine or tbe driver ot the waggon; for owing to a building recently erected close to the point where the road and line intersect, neither railway engineer nor driver of a trap can see danger until it is too late to avoid it. The crossing is a most dangerous one under present circumstances. A few mornings ago there was a narrow escape, and it is said that the same engine-driver and the same waggoner were concerned, but for that we cannot vouch.
