NEWS AND NOTES.
The expenses over the receipts in tbe recent football match at New Plymouth between the British and Tamnaki teams are said to be £27, which the guarantors will doubtless be asked to pay.
According to the Family Friend, the English team's share of the gate receipts for the two football matches in Auckland comes to £060 — tbe largest amount received by them in New Zealand. Mr. H. Brelt has also intimated to the Rugby Union that he will give a silver cup to each of the Auckland team, providing the union accepts tbe gift.
Tbe correspondent of tho Wanganui Herald says : — Tongariro is now more active than it has been since tbe outburst of 1869. Huge columns oi smoke vapour are rising from its most active cone, Ngaruahoe. On a fino day the sight seen from Taupo is grandly imposing. The recent earthquakes may have some connection with the increased activity.
Tbe amount paid by way of honorarium to members of Waste Lands Boards during tbe last financial year was, according to a return presented to the House yesterday, L 85 4; and in travelling expenses L 1193 3s Od. The amounts paid to the Taranaki members were: — T. Kelly, honorarium, £19, expenses, £8 ; A. Standisb, £17, no expenses; J. Livingston, £16 and £32; W. Cowern, £12 and £29 ss ; W. N. Syine, £20 and £20. The meetings until lately were held fortnightly, but are now held every tbreo weeks. The country members advocated monthly meetings in order to save expense, but were outvoted on tbe ground that the demand for land was so aotive that buyers would be inconvenienced by delay.
The resignation of Lieut.-Colonel Boddam of his commissions as Lieut.-Colonel New Zealand Militia, Staff Officer of Artillery, and Engineer of Colonial Defences, has been accepted.
We have looked up tbe question of dates in reference to the charge brought against the County Chairman at Okaiawa of having spoilt the merging by his loan proposals in reference to the Main South road, and we find that the loan proposals complained of were brought on by Mr. Bayly after tbe petition in favor of merging had been withdrawn, the counter petition having been received.
A return laid on the table of the House shows the expenditure and liabilities on the North Island Trunk Bailway up to March 31st. The expenditure is shown to be i-478,000, made up as follows : — Construction, .£320,913; surveys, £14,664; purchase of native lands, £94,508 ; roads and bridgee, £37,154 ; Wanganui river improvements, £2989 ; departmental, £7772. The liabilities amount to £75,904, viz., on construction, £68,918 ; surveys, £1157; purchase of native lands, £4280; roads and bridges, £1549.
