The Bishop of Limerick prohibits the meeting of Catholics, and asserts that the Pope's rescript is binding on the conscience of both the clergy and the laity. Alfred Pellwran has been appointed head German Consul in Australia, and will reside in Sydney. A cargo of Australian wheat has been sold at 345. Most of the cargo of meat by the Union Company's Selembria was thrown overboard, the remainder has been condemned. A severe gale has been experienced on the south coast of Ireland, and four French vessels which were engaged in the fishing trade were wrecked, and upwards of 100 lives lost. Steariue candles have fallen threeseventeenths. The sculling race between Bubear and Carr was won by the former by four lengths. PARIS, May 27. A cartridge factory in the vicinity of the city exploded to-day, but, although several persons were injured, there were not any fatalities. St. PETERSBURG, May 26. In replying to a deputation, the Czar assured them that the Russian authorities had made all efforts in the direction of peace. SYDNEY, May 26. The decline in silver stock during the past week represents over a million and half. Holt the ex-manager of the Bank of New Zealand here has applied for an injunction to restrain the trustees of his interest in the Rose Hill estate from transferring his interest to the bank. Holt in his capacity as manager of the bank had advanced .£IO,OOO to the estate being himself concealed as a partner. The court refused to grant the application, holding that notwithstanding the articles of corporation precluded the bank from dealing m land, the bank under the circumstances was entitled to the whole of Holt's interest in the estate. M. Pasteur has cabled to the Government agreeing to send out to this colony the vaccine of the Cumberland disease, and he authorises Dr. Germont and M. Loir, bis representatives here, to instruct the Government in the use of it. The Government are to pay the expenses of M. Pasteur's delegates, and the charges for vaccination are to be the same as those agreed to be paid by the Indian Government, viz., Bmall animals like sheep 2d each, and large animals, oxen, etc., 4d each. SYDNEY, May 27. The Government intend to apply for leave to apply to the Privy Council against the decision of the Supreme Court for granting a writ of habeas corpus. The Changsha has arrived with a large number of Chinamen. # Preparatory to the departure of the Menmur on Saturday, two of the Chinamen escaped, notwithstanding the precautions taken by the Customs, who refused to clear the vsssel unless the number of passengers were accounted for, or had paid the fine of £50 each as poll tax. After this was complied with, the vessel left, taking 34 back to Hongkong who were brought to the colonies. MELBOURNE, May 26. The Government have decided to arm the forces with a new magazine rifle. The Premier has received an intimation from the Tasmanian Government that the joint conference on the Chinese question at Kinson has replied to the effect that the New Zealand Government would like the conference to meet as soon as possible. DUBLIN, May 25. Serious rioting is reported from Letterkenny, County Donegal, owing to the secretary of the local branch of the National League having been arrested. Several of the police and many of the residents were injured. VIENNA, May 25, The Pesther Lloyd expects that Ger: many will declare war, in order to terminate the present unbearable situation.
LONDON, May 25. It is expected that the cargo of the steamer Selembria, which met with a mishap on her voyage Home, will be condemned.
