HOKITIKA,May22. A painful and serious accident occurred to a miner named McQuiggan, who was walking on a bridge on the Mannri tramway going to work before daybreak, when he was blinded by a flash of lightening and fell into the stream below sustaining a compound fracture of one leg. DUNEDIN, May 21. A. fire broke out in Gregg and Co.'s coffee and spice works, Ramsay-street, on Saturday evening. The damage was confined to the interior, the loss being estimated at between JE4OO and £500. The fire originated near the chicory mill, but the cause is a mystery. Doir, the foreman, looked up at 2.20 in the afternoon, nnd everything was all right then. The insurances are :— Equitable, £2450 (£IBOO re-insured) on stock and machinery ; South British, £1000 on the stock. The Standard had a risk divided over different parts of the building, having £225 on the building and £200 on the stock in the back part, to which the damage was strictly confined ; and £775 on the building and £800 on the stock in the front premises, which were not even singed. The total risks by this company are re-insured with the Union to the extent of one-third. It is stated that the Dutch are entertaining the grand engineering idea of pumping out and dyking off the waters of the Zuyder Zee, and of thus recovering from the ocean the vast area submerged by the latter 500 years ago. London firemen are to be clad in special suits of clothes when on dnty, made of asbestos. As everybody know*, the latter is thoroughly fireproof. Such clothing has been tried with the Paris fire brigades, and fouud to be highly successful. From a cable message it will be seen that Scott, the New Zealand pedestrian, walked in six days of twelve hours 364 mileß, equal to nearly 61 miles a day, or more than five miles an hour for every hour that he was on the track. American engineers propose to construct a bridge over the Hudson with a single span of 2850 feet, to be 145 feet above high water, and to have a total length of 6600 feet. The oableß are to be carried on towerß 500 feet high. One Hawera resident, who is an advocate of total abstinence, on being reminded this morning that this was local option day, appeared to be quite excited at the news. He evidently girded up his loins, and began to put his war-paint on there and then. " I must look up a lot of my friends," he said, " and get them to record their votes." " Yon bad better do so," was the reply, " because if you fail to stir them up, the chances are that there will be only your own vote recorded either for or against the proposals 1" Up to noon to-day only one vote had been recorded. The following cablegram from China has been received by an eminent firm of ehipbrokers in Glasgow :—": — " Inform London newspapers that the Chinese authorities prevent steamers going to ChungKing." The city of Chung-King is situated at the confluence of the Kia Kiang and the Yangtze, 882 miles from Hankow, and its chief imports are British and American cotton and woollen goods, tea cloths, grey and white shirtings, etc. Nothing is known as to the reasons for forbidding the steamers to pass up the river, and it is feared the prohibition will seriously affeot British trade. According to Truth the King of Dahomy has considerably embarrassed the invalid King of Portugal by sending him a present of a consignment of half-a-dozen negro girls, with a message that they had selected from the prettiest and plumpest damsels of his dominions. On reaching Lisbon these nymphs were attired much after the fashion of the Garden of Eden, but they have since been decorously dressed by order of King Louis. They were first sent to the Marine barracks, where they were kept for a few days in a carefully guarded wing; but this arrangement caused both scandal and inconvenience, and they were relegated to a house in the Botanioal Gardens where they still remain. Under the Supervision of Mr. P. C. Morton, the Taranaki Butter Company axe forwarding to Bio some five tons of their Egmont brand tinned butter. The article is packed in tins of various sizes, from 21*8 upwards to 401bs, and are all labelled with a significant and attractive brand. Boughly speaking, the value of the butter is set down at £500. No better agent could well be chosen than Mr. Morton in taking charge of this shipment to the American shores, as he has spent several years on the Continent, and is more or less a linguist of the Brazilian language. He will proceed with his cargo by the Doric on Saturday, the shipment being merely a following of previous ones, which were of smaller quantities. Such a large shipment of our staple produce to Bio is no small undertaking, and we trust that not only will Mr. Morton have an enjoyable trip, but that the sanguine expectations of the proprietors of the company will be fully realised.-— Taranaki News. A remarkably successful result has been aobieved in the transportation of live fish on a voyage which lasted a month. The fish fauna of Chili is very poor, and to remedy it a selection of fish, including 100 Californian salmon, 40 carp, 20 tench, 20 gudgeon, and a number of eels, minnows, &c, were sent from Paris last September. Care was taken on board when passing through tropical regions to lessen the activity of the functions by refrigeration and starvation, and a continuous aerial circulation was carried on through the water Thirty -nine of the Balmon were safely installed at Santiago, and most of the other groups as well. The gudgeon suffered most. This experiment seems to prove the possibility of carrying alive the most delicate fish to any part of the globe. Auction sales of stock will be held tomorrow by Messrs. Nolan, Tonks and. Co., at Hawera; F. E. Jackson and Co., at Wanganui j Newton King, at Stony river.
